USM files are commonly found in game installations, while video authoring and editing tools often require an MPEG-2 elementary stream in M2V format. Converting the file can make its video usable in MPEG-2 workflows, but USM audio and game-specific metadata require separate handling.

What the USM format is

In the Video category, .usm usually identifies a proprietary game-video container created with CRI Middleware Sofdec/CRI Movie technology. Publishers use it for cutscenes, menus, trailers, and other prerecorded video in console and PC games.

A USM file may contain an encoded video stream, ADX or other game audio, subtitles, interleaved segments, encryption, and playback metadata. It is not a normal consumer video container, so common players and editors may not open it directly. You typically encounter USM files inside a game's data or movie directories rather than as camera recordings or exported desktop videos.

What the M2V format is

.m2v is an MPEG-2 Video elementary stream. It contains video only; audio, subtitles, menus, and chapter information are stored separately, commonly as MPEG audio, AC-3, or authoring-project assets.

M2V is useful for DVD and MPEG-2 authoring workflows and for applications that accept a standalone MPEG-2 stream instead of a container such as MPEG-2 Program Stream or MPEG-2 Transport Stream. Its frame structure and broad authoring-tool support are advantages, but MPEG-2 generally produces larger files than newer codecs at comparable visual quality.

How to actually convert USM to M2V

  1. Make a working copy of the USM file. Game assets can be encrypted, segmented, or paired with separate audio files, and altering the original can make later extraction harder.
  2. Extract the video stream with a USM-capable utility such as VGMToolbox or a compatible USM demuxer. Use the program's USM extraction or deinterleaving function rather than simply renaming the extension. The result may be an elementary MPEG-1 stream, a codec-specific stream, or separate video and audio files.
  3. Inspect the extracted video with MediaInfo or FFmpeg. If the extractor already produces .m2v, verify that it is MPEG-2 before using it; changing a filename extension does not convert the codec.
  4. For an extracted stream that FFmpeg can decode, encode MPEG-2 video and suppress audio with:

ffmpeg -i extracted_video.m1v -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -an converted_video.m2v

-an ensures that only the video elementary stream is written. Replace extracted_video.m1v with the actual extracted filename. For a target bitrate rather than quality-based encoding, use settings such as -b:v 6000k -maxrate 8000k -bufsize 1835k, adjusting them to the intended authoring standard.

If FFmpeg cannot decode the extracted stream, use the decoder supplied with the USM extraction tool to create an intermediate format such as AVI or a sequence of images, then encode that intermediate with FFmpeg. A direct USM-to-M2V conversion is not possible when the USM contains encrypted or unsupported video until it has been decrypted or decoded.

For a no-installation option, upload the file to the free converter on 101convert.com, choose M2V as the output, and download the result if USM is accepted by the site's current converter. Do not upload copyrighted game assets unless you have permission, and keep the original because online conversion may omit embedded game audio or metadata.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Re-encoding an extracted USM video to MPEG-2 introduces generation loss. Preserve the source dimensions, frame rate, aspect ratio, and interlacing mode where possible; forcing a different frame rate can cause judder or audio synchronization problems in a later authoring project.

M2V cannot carry the audio commonly associated with USM. Keep the demuxed audio separately and convert it to the format required by the target authoring application. USM subtitles, looping instructions, encryption data, and game playback metadata are also not transferred to M2V.

Some USM files use unusual frame rates, multiple video tracks, or game-specific encryption. An extractor may produce several segments that must be joined in order before encoding. Test the resulting .m2v in the intended authoring or editing program rather than relying only on its filename.
