What the KUX format is
KUX is a proprietary video container used primarily by Youku's desktop software and download system. It commonly stores video segmented or protected for playback through Youku-related applications, so its compatibility outside that ecosystem is limited.
You normally encounter .kux files after downloading videos from Youku. Some KUX variants can be read by FFmpeg, while protected or newer variants may require the official Youku software to produce a playable export first.
What the MJPG format is
MJPG, or Motion JPEG, stores video as a sequence of individually JPEG-compressed frames. Each frame can be decoded independently, which makes MJPEG suitable for video capture hardware, editing systems, inspection software, and applications that need simple frame access.
MJPG uses more storage than modern inter-frame codecs such as H.264 or H.265, but it avoids dependencies between frames and is often easier to edit. MJPEG video is commonly delivered in an AVI container; a raw .mjpg file generally contains video only and may not preserve audio.
How to actually convert KUX to MJPG
The built-in converter on 101convert.com can convert a KUX file to MJPG without installing desktop software:
- Open the KUX-to-MJPG converter on 101convert.com.
- Select or drag the
.kuxfile into the upload area. - Choose MJPG as the output format.
- Start the conversion and download the resulting file when processing finishes.
For local conversion, FFmpeg is suitable when it can decode the particular KUX file. To create a raw Motion JPEG stream, run:
ffmpeg -i input.kux -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an output.mjpg
The -q:v value controls JPEG quality; lower values produce better quality and larger files. To retain audio in a more widely supported MJPEG file, use an AVI container and uncompressed PCM audio:
ffmpeg -i input.kux -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi
Check whether FFmpeg recognizes the source before converting:
ffprobe input.kux
If FFmpeg reports an unknown format, cannot decrypt the stream, or finds no video stream, obtain a playable export through the authorized Youku application first, then transcode that exported file to MJPEG.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
MJPEG conversion decodes and re-encodes every frame, so it is not lossless. Use a lower-quality setting such as -q:v 5 to reduce file size, or a higher-quality setting such as -q:v 2 when preserving detail matters; the exact size depends on resolution and image complexity.
Raw MJPG output normally has no audio. Use AVI or another container that supports both MJPEG video and audio when synchronized sound is required. Some devices also require a specific frame rate, pixel format, or resolution; add settings such as -r 30 only when the destination specification requires them.
Conversion does not remove access restrictions from protected content. Only convert files you are authorized to download and process.
