What the KUX format is

KUX is a proprietary Youku video container used mainly for downloaded or cached offline playback. Youku desktop software and related download components create KUX files; they are commonly found in download or cache folders rather than as camera recordings or standard video exports.

KUX files may contain proprietary encryption or protection tied to the Youku application, account, region, or playback license. A normal media converter may therefore reject the file, show no duration, or produce an unusable output.

What the TRP format is

TRP is generally an MPEG transport stream, similar to an .ts file, with the .trp extension used by particular televisions, satellite receivers, DVRs, and media players. It can carry video, audio, subtitles, and program metadata in packets designed for streamed or broadcast-style playback.

TRP is useful when the target device specifically expects a transport stream. The extension alone does not define the codecs: one device may accept H.264 with AAC, while another may require MPEG-2 video with AC-3 or MPEG audio.

How to actually convert KUX to TRP

There is usually no reliable direct KUX-to-TRP conversion because FFmpeg and other general-purpose converters cannot decrypt every KUX file. First obtain a normal, playable video through an authorized Youku download or export function, then create the TRP container from that file.

1. Open the video in the official Youku software and use its available download, export, or offline-video option. If it produces MP4 or another standard file, use that file as the source. Do not rename video.kux to video.mp4; changing the extension does not decrypt or convert it.
2. Install FFmpeg and check the source streams with ffprobe input.mp4. Confirm that the file contains the expected video and audio tracks and identify their codecs.
3. For a compatible source, remux without re-encoding using ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f mpegts output.trp. The -f mpegts option creates an MPEG transport stream; output.trp supplies the requested extension.
4. If the playback device rejects the copied codecs, create a more broadly compatible stream with ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.trp. This is slower and reduces quality because both streams are re-encoded.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Remuxing with -c copy does not reduce quality, but it only changes the container and works only when the target device supports the source codecs. Transcoding to MPEG-2 and MP2 or AC-3 improves compatibility with older equipment but creates a larger file and introduces generation loss.

Some KUX downloads remain license-bound even after download, so third-party tools may be unable to read them. DRM removal or extraction can also violate Youku’s terms or copyright restrictions; convert only content you are authorized to use.

A TRP file may contain multiple programs or unusual timing metadata, and some devices require a specific resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio codec, or maximum file size. Check the device manual if a generated file plays on a computer but not on the intended television or recorder.
