A KUX file usually comes from an offline download made by the Youku desktop client, while F4V is required by some older Flash-based video workflows and archive systems. Converting it requires extracting or decoding the KUX stream first; standard video tools generally cannot read the proprietary KUX container directly.

What the KUX format is

KUX is a proprietary video format used by Youku and its desktop download software for offline playback. You encounter it after downloading a Youku video rather than receiving a conventional MP4 file. KUX downloads may contain proprietary metadata, segmented content, or encryption tied to the Youku application and account.

Because KUX is not a normal open container, ffmpeg, VLC, and most general-purpose editors may reject it or show incomplete media information. A KUX file can only be converted when the source is accessible to the converter or has first been exported to a standard format by an authorized Youku application or compatible KUX decoder.

What the F4V format is

F4V is Adobe's Flash Video container based on the ISO Base Media File Format, the same container family used by MP4. It commonly stores H.264 video with AAC audio and was designed for Adobe Flash Media Server and Flash Player workflows.

F4V can provide better H.264 quality and broader codec support than the older FLV container, but Flash Player and many Flash delivery systems are obsolete. Current media players and editors usually prefer MP4, so F4V is useful mainly when a legacy application, server, or archive explicitly requires the .f4v extension.

How to actually convert KUX to F4V

Use the built-in online converter

  1. Open the KUX-to-F4V converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the KUX file and select F4V as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion, then download the resulting F4V file when processing finishes.

This method works only if the service can decode that particular KUX variant. A file that is still encrypted or account-bound may be rejected; renaming .kux to .f4v does not decrypt or convert it.

Use a standard intermediate file

  1. In the Youku desktop client, use its available download, export, or offline-video management options to obtain an authorized MP4 or other standard video file. The exact menu names vary by client version.
  2. Check the intermediate file with ffprobe input.mp4. Confirm that it contains a video stream and, preferably, H.264 video and AAC audio.
  3. Try a lossless container conversion with ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c copy output.f4v. This copies the existing audio and video without re-encoding.
  4. If the source codecs or timestamps are incompatible, re-encode with ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -profile:v main -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart output.f4v.
  5. Open the result in the target program and check duration, audio synchronization, seeking, and frame rate.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The -c copy command preserves the original quality because it does not decode and recompress the streams. The re-encoding command reduces quality slightly and takes longer, but creates H.264/AAC media that is more likely to fit older F4V workflows.

F4V support is not universal: some applications recognize only FLV, while modern editors may import MP4 but reject F4V despite the similar container structure. If the recipient does not specifically require F4V, MP4 is normally the more compatible delivery format.

Do not distribute or bypass Youku-protected downloads without the rights holder's permission. If the KUX file is encrypted or restricted to application playback, a generic converter cannot reliably recover its media streams.
