ISMV files are Smooth Streaming video fragments, so many standard players and editors cannot open them directly. Converting one to MJPG produces independently decodable JPEG-compressed frames for applications, inspection tools, or editing workflows that specifically require Motion JPEG.

What the ISMV format is

ISMV is the video-fragment format used by Microsoft Smooth Streaming. It is based on fragmented ISO Base Media File Format, closely related to MP4, and commonly contains H.264/AVC video with AAC audio. Smooth Streaming packaging tools, Microsoft Expression Encoder, and IIS Media Services workflows can create ISMV fragments; they are usually encountered beside an .ism manifest in a streaming archive or media server directory.

An ISMV file may be only one fragment of a complete presentation rather than a self-contained movie. If the source is split into multiple fragments, converting one file may produce only a short section of the stream.

What the MJPG format is

MJPG means Motion JPEG: each video frame is stored as a separate JPEG image. Unlike H.264, it does not use inter-frame prediction, so individual frames can be decoded, extracted, or edited without processing neighboring frames.

MJPG is useful with video-analysis software, capture hardware, legacy editors, and workflows that need simple frame access. Its main disadvantages are large files and lower compression efficiency than H.264 or HEVC. The .mjpg extension commonly identifies a raw Motion JPEG stream; some programs instead expect MJPEG video inside an AVI container.

How to convert ISMV to MJPG

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop method. First inspect the input:

ffprobe input.ismv

Convert the video stream to a raw MJPEG file:

ffmpeg -i input.ismv -map 0:v:0 -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an output.mjpg

Here, -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream, -c:v mjpeg selects Motion JPEG encoding, -q:v 3 requests high visual quality, and -an removes audio because a raw MJPG stream normally carries video only. Use a value such as 5 to reduce the output size with some additional JPEG loss; FFmpeg's JPEG quality scale uses lower numbers for higher quality.

To retain the original frame rate and dimensions, omit scaling and frame-rate options. To create a more compatible 30-fps result, use:

ffmpeg -i input.ismv -map 0:v:0 -vf fps=30 -c:v mjpeg -q:v 4 -an output.mjpg

If the receiving application expects an AVI container rather than a raw .mjpg stream, create an MJPEG AVI instead:

ffmpeg -i input.ismv -map 0:v:0 -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an output.avi

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• MJPG re-encodes the source, so it is not lossless. Because ISMV video is commonly already H.264-compressed, the conversion cannot restore detail that was removed during the original encoding.
• MJPG files can be much larger than the ISMV source. Lowering -q:v quality, reducing the frame size, or lowering the frame rate reduces storage requirements.
• A fragmented ISMV may not decode correctly when separated from its manifest or related fragments. If FFmpeg reports missing metadata or produces only part of the program, obtain the complete Smooth Streaming set and reconstruct it before encoding.
• Raw .mjpg files may lack duration, audio, timestamps, or metadata expected by desktop players. Use the AVI command when the target software does not recognize the raw MJPEG muxer.
