What the ISMV format is

ISMV is the filename extension used for fragmented MP4 media in Microsoft Smooth Streaming. IIS Media Services and Microsoft Expression Encoder created ISMV files for adaptive web delivery, usually alongside an .ism manifest and separate audio or video streams.

An ISMV file can contain H.264 video, AAC audio, or other codecs supported by the encoding profile. The fragmented structure is optimized for streaming segments rather than ordinary file playback, so some desktop players and editors may reject it even when its underlying codecs are supported.

What the M4V format is

M4V is an MPEG-4 video container, usually containing H.264 video and AAC audio. It is commonly accepted by Apple software, media players, mobile devices, and video editors. M4V can also carry Apple FairPlay DRM, but changing a filename or remuxing a protected file does not remove encryption.

M4V is useful when the destination application recognizes MPEG-4 files but does not recognize Smooth Streaming fragments. It does not automatically reduce file size or improve quality; those results depend on the selected codecs, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate.

How to convert ISMV to M4V

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg can often remux an unprotected ISMV file without re-encoding, which preserves quality and is faster than transcoding.

1. Install FFmpeg and place the source file in an accessible folder.
2. Inspect the streams with ffprobe input.ismv if the file contains multiple audio or video tracks.
3. Try a stream-copy conversion:

ffmpeg -i input.ismv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -movflags +faststart output.m4v

-map 0:a? includes audio when present without failing on video-only files. The command copies the existing streams, so it works only when the codecs and fragmented-container contents can be written to a normal MP4-family file.

If FFmpeg reports an unsupported codec, timestamp problem, or muxing error, transcode to broadly compatible H.264 video and AAC audio:

ffmpeg -i input.ismv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.m4v

Use a lower -crf value for higher video quality and a larger file; values around 18–23 are typical for H.264. Omit -map 0:a? only if the source has no audio.
