A VCD conversion is useful when an M2T recording must play on a Video CD player or be authored to a standard VCD disc. The process converts HDV’s MPEG-2 transport stream into the lower-resolution MPEG-1 stream required by VCD, so the result is much smaller but not HD quality.

What the M2T format is

M2T is commonly an MPEG-2 transport stream containing HDV video from MiniDV and other HDV camcorders. HDV capture utilities such as HDVSplit and video editors including Adobe Premiere Pro can create or preserve .m2t files during camera capture. The stream commonly uses 1440×1080 interlaced video with MPEG-2 compression and may contain MPEG Layer II audio.

What the VCD format is

Video CD uses an MPEG-1 system stream on a CD-ROM with fixed compatibility parameters: 352×288 at 25 fps for PAL or 352×240 at 29.97 fps for NTSC, approximately 1,150 kbit/s video, MPEG Layer II audio at 44.1 kHz, and usually 224 kbit/s audio. A VCD can play in compatible standalone DVD/VCD players and software media players, but it has substantially lower resolution and quality than HDV.

A VCD is normally delivered as a disc image, such as a .bin and .cue pair, rather than as one file named .vcd. The video inside the authored disc is usually stored under MPEGAV/AVSEQ01.DAT.

How to actually convert M2T to VCD

Using FFmpeg for the compliant video stream

  1. Determine the source television standard. Use pal-vcd for PAL footage and ntsc-vcd for NTSC footage; do not choose based only on the computer’s regional settings.
  2. Convert the file with FFmpeg. For PAL, use:
    ffmpeg -i input.m2t -target pal-vcd output.mpg
    For NTSC, use:
    ffmpeg -i input.m2t -target ntsc-vcd output.mpg
  3. If the M2T source is interlaced, add deinterlacing before the VCD preset to reduce combing during the downscale:
    ffmpeg -i input.m2t -vf yadif -target pal-vcd output.mpg
Replace pal-vcd with ntsc-vcd for NTSC output.

FFmpeg’s -target preset sets the VCD frame size, frame rate, MPEG-1 video encoding, audio rate, sampling rate, and MPEG program-stream settings. Check the resulting output.mpg in a media player before authoring the disc.

Creating a VCD disc image

  1. Install VCDImager and run:
    vcdimager -t vcd2 -c output.cue -b output.bin output.mpg
  2. Open output.cue in CD-burning software and burn it as an image, not as a data CD. A disc-authoring application may instead provide Video CD as the project type; import the MPEG-1 file and let the application create the image.

For a file-only conversion, stop after creating output.mpg. On 101convert.com, upload the M2T file, select VCD as the output format, and download the converted result without installing software; disc-image authoring may still be required for physical VCD playback.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

VCD conversion is lossy in two stages: HDV is decoded and reduced to 352-pixel-wide MPEG-1 video, then re-encoded. Fine detail, motion clarity, and interlaced edges cannot be retained. Use the source’s original PAL or NTSC standard to avoid incorrect frame-rate conversion, jerky motion, or incompatibility with a player.

Long M2T recordings may exceed the capacity of a 74-minute or 80-minute CD; VCD capacity is based mainly on playback time, with roughly 74 or 80 minutes at standard VCD rates. Split the video into multiple titles or discs when necessary. Some modern DVD and Blu-ray players no longer support VCD, so test the authored image with the intended hardware.
