What the IFV format is
IFV is a legacy video format associated with older capture and surveillance applications. Its exact container and codec depend on the program that created it, so two files with an .ifv extension may not be interchangeable.
IFV files are commonly encountered when retrieving footage from discontinued DVR software, proprietary camera utilities, or archived installations. Some modern media players and FFmpeg builds cannot decode them directly. The creating application may be required to export the recording to AVI, MPEG, or another standard format before conversion.
What the VCD format is
Video CD uses a standardized MPEG-1 program stream, normally stored as an .mpg file. A compliant VCD uses 352×288 video at 25 fps for PAL or 352×240 at approximately 29.97 fps for NTSC, with MPEG-1 Layer II audio at 44.1 kHz.
VCD files are useful for authoring discs that work in compatible VCD players and some DVD players. The format is easy to decode but has low resolution and a typical video bitrate of about 1,150 kbit/s; it is not suitable when preserving high-definition footage is the priority.
How to actually convert IFV to VCD
The built-in converter on 101convert.com can convert the file online for free without installing software. Upload the IFV file, select VCD or MPEG-1 as the output, start the conversion, and download the resulting MPEG file. This works only when the service recognizes the particular IFV variant and can decode it.
For local conversion, first test the file with FFmpeg:
ffprobe input.ifv
If FFmpeg identifies a video stream, create a PAL-compatible VCD MPEG file with:
ffmpeg -i input.ifv -target pal-vcd output.mpg
For an NTSC recording, use:
ffmpeg -i input.ifv -target ntsc-vcd output.mpg
FFmpeg selects the required MPEG-1 video, audio, frame size, frame rate, and bitrate settings through the VCD target preset. Replace input.ifv with the actual filename; quote the filename if it contains spaces.
If FFmpeg reports an unknown format, missing decoder, or invalid data, open the recording in the original IFV application and use its export function, such as File → Export or Save as AVI. Then convert the exported file:
ffmpeg -i exported.avi -target pal-vcd output.mpg
To create a physical VCD, the MPEG file must also be authored with VCD2.0 disc structure rather than simply copied to a data CD. A tool such as VCDImager can create the disc image:
vcdimager -t vcd2 -c videocd.xml -b videocd.bin output.mpg
The XML file must describe the MPEG track; graphical VCD-authoring software can generate this structure more conveniently. Burn the resulting image with a disc-burning application that supports VCD images.
Quality and compatibility limits
Conversion cannot restore detail lost in the original IFV recording. Scaling a small surveillance image to VCD dimensions changes its size but does not improve clarity, and VCD encoding introduces additional MPEG-1 compression.
Choose PAL or NTSC according to the source and intended player. A PAL file may play incorrectly or not at all on an NTSC-only device, and the reverse also applies. Some IFV files contain proprietary timestamps, encryption, or codecs that ordinary converters cannot read; in those cases, the original recorder software is the required first conversion step.
An .mpg file produced with FFmpeg is VCD-compatible MPEG-1, but it is not itself a finished VCD disc. Authoring is required for standalone players.
