Some older DVD-authoring tools, broadcast systems, and hardware players accept MPEG-1 video in an .m1v elementary stream but do not read OGM containers. Converting requires decoding the OGM video and re-encoding it as MPEG-1; the original OGM audio is not included because M1V stores video only.
What the OGM format is
OGM, or Ogg Media, is an Ogg-based multimedia container used mainly in the 2000s for video files containing codecs such as Xvid, DivX, or Theora, alongside Vorbis audio and sometimes subtitles. Files commonly came from older desktop encoders, media archives, and peer-to-peer video collections. Modern players often support the underlying codecs but may have limited OGM container support.
What the M1V format is
M1V is an MPEG-1 Video elementary stream, usually identified by the .m1v extension. It contains compressed video without an audio track, subtitles, menus, or container metadata. MPEG-1 video is widely supported by older authoring software, legacy hardware, and workflows built around Video CD-era formats, but it is less efficient than modern codecs and normally produces a larger file at comparable quality.
How to actually convert OGM to M1V
The built-in converter on 101convert.com can perform the conversion for free without installing software. Upload the .ogm file, select M1V as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .m1v file. The source must contain a video stream; an OGM containing only audio cannot produce a valid M1V video file.
For local processing, FFmpeg provides control over the video stream and MPEG-1 encoding:
ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -c:v mpeg1video -b:v 2000k -f mpeg1video output.m1v-map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream and excludes OGM audio. Replace input.ogm and output.m1v with the actual filenames. Increase or decrease -b:v to change quality and file size; MPEG-1 compatibility requirements may impose limits on frame size, frame rate, bitrate, and pixel format.
To inspect the source streams before conversion, run:
ffprobe input.ogmIf the OGM contains several video streams, change 0:v:0 to the required stream index. If the target application expects a specific MPEG-1 profile, use its documented resolution, frame-rate, and bitrate values rather than relying on FFmpeg defaults.
Quality and compatibility limitations
This conversion is normally lossy: the OGM video is decoded and encoded again with MPEG-1, so fine detail and motion quality can decrease. The M1V output deliberately has no audio; retain the original OGM or separately convert its audio if the destination workflow supports an accompanying audio file.
An OGM video encoded with a codec unsupported by the chosen decoder may require an FFmpeg build with the relevant codec enabled. Subtitles, chapters, multiple audio tracks, and container metadata are discarded unless handled separately. MPEG-1 may also require resizing or frame-rate conversion for older playback devices.
