Some older Windows applications, media players, and editing systems accept WMV but cannot decode HEVC/H.265. Converting creates a more widely supported Windows Media file for playback, editing, or sharing on those systems.

What the HEVC format is

HEVC, also called H.265, is a video codec designed to deliver similar visual quality to H.264 at lower bitrates. Phones, action cameras, screen-recording tools, Blu-ray-compatible workflows, and modern cameras commonly create HEVC video; files usually use .mp4, .mov, or .mkv containers, although an elementary video stream may use .hevc or .h265.

HEVC can contain 4K video, high frame rates, 10-bit color, and HDR metadata. The filename extension identifies the container or stream, not every property of the encoded video.

What the WMV format is

WMV is the Windows Media Video family of codecs and file formats, commonly stored in a .wmv container. It is supported by many older Windows players, presentation tools, media libraries, and video editors. WMV files can be smaller than lightly compressed or uncompressed source video, but modern HEVC usually provides better quality at the same bitrate.

For the widest legacy compatibility, a conversion normally uses the WMV2 video codec with Windows Media Audio, rather than placing HEVC inside a WMV-named file. Changing the extension alone does not perform this conversion.

How to actually convert HEVC to WMV

For desktop conversion, FFmpeg provides direct control over the WMV codecs and works on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal or Command Prompt, and identify the source filename.

  1. For an HEVC file with a container such as MP4 or MKV, run:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v wmv2 -b:v 5M -c:a wmav2 -b:a 192k output.wmv

Replace input.mp4 with the actual source filename. Change 5M to suit the source resolution: about 2–4 Mbps is usually sufficient for 720p, 4–8 Mbps for 1080p, and higher rates may be needed for detailed 4K material. If the source has no audio, omit the audio options:

ffmpeg -i input.hevc -c:v wmv2 -b:v 5M output.wmv

For a raw HEVC stream, FFmpeg may need explicit input parameters if automatic detection fails, for example:

ffmpeg -f hevc -i input.hevc -c:v wmv2 -b:v 5M output.wmv

You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the HEVC video, select WMV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes.

Quality and compatibility limitations

This conversion requires re-encoding; HEVC video cannot normally be copied directly into a WMV file because WMV-compatible players do not decode HEVC. Re-encoding can reduce detail, introduce motion artifacts, and change color handling, so keep the original HEVC file as the archival master.

WMV2 output is commonly limited to 8-bit SDR workflows. HDR metadata, 10-bit precision, wide-gamut color, variable-frame-rate behavior, subtitles, chapters, and some multichannel audio formats may not survive the conversion. Test the output in the program that requires WMV, and choose a constant frame rate when an older editor rejects variable-frame-rate footage:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf fps=30 -c:v wmv2 -b:v 5M -c:a wmav2 -b:a 192k output.wmv
