Free online WEBM to TS converter

Some IPTV systems, broadcast tools, set-top boxes, and editing applications require MPEG transport stream instead of WEBM. Converting is either a lossless container change when the codecs are accepted or a full re-encode when the target requires H.264 and AAC.

What the WEBM format is

WEBM is an open multimedia container designed primarily for web video. It commonly stores VP8, VP9, or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis audio. Web browsers, screen-recording applications, Chromium-based tools, OBS Studio, and web-download utilities frequently create WEBM files.

The container extension does not determine codec compatibility. A WEBM file can contain video or audio that a TS player, broadcast encoder, or hardware device cannot decode.

What the TS format is

TS, or MPEG transport stream, is a packetized container used for digital television, IPTV, broadcast contribution, and some hardware playback systems. It divides data into fixed-size transport packets and includes stream metadata designed for continuous transmission and recovery from transmission errors.

TS workflows most commonly expect MPEG-2 or H.264 video and MP2, AAC, or AC-3 audio. Support for VP8, VP9, AV1, Opus, and Vorbis inside TS varies by application, so H.264 video with AAC audio is usually the safest general-purpose target. TS can carry multiple programs and tracks, but the receiving device may support only a limited subset.

How to convert with FFmpeg

FFmpeg provides the most control on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Install it from an official package, open Command Prompt or Terminal, and use ffprobe to inspect the source:

ffprobe input.webm

If the target accepts the existing codecs, try a stream copy. This changes the container without decoding or re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.webm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f mpegts output.ts

-map 0:a? makes the audio track optional, so the command also works for a video-only WEBM. Stream copying is fast and preserves the source quality, but it may fail during muxing or produce a file that the target cannot decode when the original VP8, VP9, AV1, Opus, or Vorbis streams are unsupported.

For wider compatibility, re-encode the video and audio:

ffmpeg -i input.webm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 23 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.ts

-crf 23 is a valid H.264 quality setting; values around 18–23 are common, with lower values producing higher quality and larger files. Use -preset fast for quicker encoding or -preset slow for better compression at the cost of time. If the destination specifically requires MPEG-2 video or MP2 audio, replace libx264 and aac with the codecs required by that system.

Quality and compatibility limits

Remuxing with -c copy does not reduce quality, but it also does not make incompatible codecs compatible. Re-encoding to H.264/AAC improves playback support but takes longer and introduces generation loss.

Changing containers alone does not reduce file size. To create a smaller re-encoded file, increase the H.264 CRF value, reduce resolution or frame rate, or lower the audio bitrate.

WEBM files may contain variable-frame-rate video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, or metadata that the destination does not support. The commands above select the first video and all available audio tracks; adjust the -map options when a particular track is required. Check the result with ffprobe output.ts or the target application's media-information panel.
