Free online OGV to MKV converter

A media player, editor, or archive workflow may require an MKV container when it does not accept an OGV file. Converting by remuxing can preserve the original streams without quality loss; transcoding is required when the codecs are incompatible or a smaller file is needed.

What OGV and MKV contain

OGV is a video file that uses the Ogg container, usually with Theora video and Vorbis audio. It is associated with Xiph.Org projects, open-source software, Linux applications, and older web-video workflows. An OGV file can contain other codecs, so inspect the actual streams instead of assuming every file uses Theora and Vorbis.

MKV is the common filename extension for Matroska, an open multimedia container. It can store multiple video and audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, metadata, and attachments in one file. MKV supports codecs such as H.264, H.265, VP9, AV1, AAC, Opus, Vorbis, and many others, but the container itself does not determine video quality or guarantee playback on every device.

Choose remuxing or transcoding

• Remux when the existing video and audio codecs are suitable for MKV. The streams are copied into a new container, so the operation is fast and does not reduce quality.
• Transcode when a player or editor cannot decode Theora, Vorbis, or another source codec, or when you need to reduce the file size. Transcoding decodes and re-encodes the media, which can reduce quality and takes longer.

Use ffprobe input.ogv, MediaInfo, or VLC’s codec information to identify the source codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio tracks, and subtitles before choosing a method.

Convert with FFmpeg without re-encoding

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop option for a lossless container conversion. After installing it, run:

ffmpeg -i input.ogv -map 0 -c copy output.mkv

-map 0 includes all input streams, while -c copy copies them without re-encoding. Replace the filenames with the actual source and destination paths. The command works when the streams are supported in Matroska; if a particular subtitle, attachment, or codec causes an error, remux only the required streams or use transcoding.

Transcode with FFmpeg when compatibility requires it

For broad software compatibility, encode video as H.264 and audio as AAC:

ffmpeg -i input.ogv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -crf 20 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mkv

A CRF value around 18–23 is a typical H.264 quality range; lower values produce larger files and higher quality. Change the audio bitrate or omit the audio mapping if the source has no audio. This process cannot restore detail already lost in the OGV source.

Use a graphical application

HandBrake can open many OGV files and export MKV on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Open the file with File → Open Source, choose MKV in the format or summary controls, select a video and audio preset, set the destination filename, and click Start Encode. HandBrake normally transcodes rather than performs a stream-copy remux, so it is slower and may change quality. Check its preview or output when the source contains unusual streams.

• Remuxing does not improve quality, reduce resolution, or shrink a file substantially; it only changes the container.
• Some TVs, phones, browsers, and editors support MKV only partially. Confirm support for the selected video, audio, subtitle, and codec combination, not just the .mkv extension.
• After conversion, check duration, synchronization, every audio track, subtitle selection, chapters, and seeking. Keep the original OGV until the MKV has been verified.
