Source format

SSIF stands for Stereo Scopic Interleaved File and is used on Blu-ray 3D discs. It stores stereoscopic video data used for 3D playback, typically alongside the main Blu-ray streams in the BDMV/SSIF folder structure. SSIF is not a common standalone video format, so it is usually handled as part of a Blu-ray disc or disc folder rather than converted directly like a normal media file.

MKV is the Matroska Video container. It can hold video, audio, subtitles, chapters, and metadata in one file. MKV is a practical target for Blu-ray content because it preserves quality while making the movie easier to store and play than a full disc structure.

Can ssif be converted to mkv?

Not directly in the usual sense. There are no common tools that take a standalone .ssif file and simply convert it to .mkv as if it were a regular video clip. In practice, you work from the Blu-ray disc or the full BDMV folder, and the software remuxes the movie streams into MKV.

Best way to create mkv files from ssif

The most reliable desktop tool is MakeMKV. It can read Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D structures and remux the selected streams into MKV without re-encoding, which preserves the original quality.

1. Install MakeMKV on Windows, macOS, or Linux.
2. Open the Blu-ray disc, or open the BDMV folder if you already have a disc backup.
3. Let MakeMKV scan the source and list the available titles.
4. Select the main movie, audio tracks, subtitles, and chapters you want to keep.
5. Choose an output folder and start the process. MakeMKV will create one or more .mkv files.

If you need more control over stream selection or want to build a custom Blu-ray remux workflow, tsMuxeR can also be useful. It is better suited to advanced users and is typically used for remuxing Blu-ray streams rather than converting SSIF files on their own.

Online converters

Online converters are generally not a good fit for SSIF to MKV. Blu-ray 3D sources are large, often contain multiple streams, and may be copy-protected.
