Convert UNDF to MKV

A file labelled .undf may need to be placed in an MKV container when a media player, editor, or archive system cannot identify or open it. Conversion is possible only if the file contains recoverable audio or video streams; an unidentified, encrypted, or damaged file cannot be converted by changing its extension.

What UNDF means

UNDF is not a standardized multimedia format, codec, or container. In VLC and some other media software, undf can mean “undefined format”: the program could not identify the file’s container or data. This message does not necessarily mean that the file has a real .undf extension.

A file actually named .undf has no universally defined specification or single known creator. It may be a renamed MP4, MOV, AVI, MPEG transport stream, camera or recorder export, incomplete download, encrypted file, or proprietary application data. No conversion tool can reliably process every file using that extension.

Do not install separate VLC codec packs to solve this error. Current VLC releases include their own decoding libraries; the usual causes are an incomplete file, an unsupported proprietary format, encryption, or unrecognized container data.

Identify the file before attempting conversion. Use MediaInfo on Windows, macOS, or Linux, or run these commands with FFmpeg installed:

file input.undf
ffprobe -hide_banner input.undf

If the tools report a container and streams such as H.264, HEVC, AAC, MPEG-TS, MP4, Matroska, or AVI, the file may be usable. If they report invalid data, encryption, or only generic data, obtain the original file again or export it through the software or device that created it.

What MKV is

MKV, or Matroska Video, is a multimedia container used by media players, home-media servers, archives, and video collections. It can store video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and attachments in one file.

Matroska can carry common streams including H.264, H.265/HEVC, AV1, VP9, AAC, AC-3, DTS, FLAC, SRT, and PGS subtitles. It is supported by VLC, MPV, Kodi, Plex, and Jellyfin. Some televisions, mobile devices, and hardware players accept MKV files but reject particular codecs inside them, especially HEVC, DTS, or high-profile video.

Convert identified media to MKV

Use FFmpeg when possible because it shows what the file contains and can remux streams without recompression. Work on a copy of the original file.

If ffprobe detects playable streams, first try a lossless remux:

ffmpeg -i input.undf -map 0:v? -map 0:a? -map 0:s? -map_metadata 0 -c copy output.mkv

This copies the existing video, audio, and subtitle streams into an MKV container. It is fast, does not reduce quality, and usually does not reduce file size. Test output.mkv in VLC or MPV before deleting the source.

If stream copying fails, or the target device requires more widely supported codecs, re-encode to H.264 video and AAC audio:

ffmpeg -i input.undf -map 0:v? -map 0:a? -map 0:s? -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 192k -c:s copy output.mkv

-crf 18 is a high-quality H.264 setting. Use -crf 20 to -crf 22 for smaller files, or a lower value such as 16 when preserving more detail matters. Re-encoding takes longer and introduces a new generation of lossy video compression.

MKVToolNix GUI is a desktop option for remuxing valid media without command-line use. Add the detected source file, select the required tracks, set an .mkv destination, and choose Start multiplexing. It cannot repair corrupted data or decode proprietary or encrypted files.

VLC can convert files that it already plays through Media → Convert / Save, but its profiles may re-encode streams and provide less diagnostic detail than FFmpeg. Use it only after confirming that VLC can open the complete source file.

Online services such as CloudConvert can convert recognized video formats, but they are not reliable format detectors for arbitrary .undf files. Identify the source first, and do not upload private recordings, confidential footage, or files containing personal data.

Compatibility and recovery limits

Renaming input.undf to input.mkv does not convert it. Renaming to a suspected original extension can sometimes help a program select the correct parser, but only when the internal data already matches that format.

MKV is a container, not a playback guarantee. A lossless remux preserves the original codecs, so a television that cannot decode the source HEVC video or DTS audio will still fail to play the MKV. Re-encode to H.264 and AAC for broader hardware compatibility, or use MP4 when the receiving device specifically requires it.

If FFmpeg and MediaInfo cannot identify usable streams, conversion software cannot reconstruct missing media. Complete the download, copy the file again from the recording device, check for a companion metadata file, or use the originating program’s export function to create MP4, MOV, or MKV.
