Programs that support Matroska may require an MKV file instead of a Sony camcorder’s LRF proxy video. Converting it can make the footage easier to archive, inspect, or remux with other audio and subtitle streams, but it cannot restore the quality of the original high-resolution recording.

What the LRF format is

In the Video category, LRF usually means a low-resolution video file created by Sony Handycam camcorders. Sony cameras may store it alongside the original high-resolution recording as a proxy for previewing, quick transfer, or basic playback in Sony media software such as Picture Motion Browser.

LRF files are not the camera’s full-quality master. The corresponding high-resolution file may use an extension such as .M2TS, .MPG, or another Sony-specific recording format, depending on the camera model. Keep that original file if image quality matters.

What the MKV format is

MKV, or Matroska Video, is a multimedia container that can hold video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and metadata in one file. It is useful for archival copies, computer playback, and workflows that need several streams without embedding them into separate files.

MKV does not define a single video codec. A conversion can either copy the codecs already inside the LRF file into an MKV container or re-encode them to a codec such as H.264 or H.265.

How to convert LRF to MKV

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop option because it can probe the video streams and either remux or re-encode them.

  1. Install FFmpeg and place the LRF file in a convenient folder.
  2. Inspect the source streams with ffmpeg -i input.LRF. The output lists the detected video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and duration.
  3. Try a lossless container conversion first:

ffmpeg -i input.LRF -map 0 -c copy output.mkv

The -map 0 option includes all detected streams, while -c copy avoids re-encoding and therefore does not reduce quality. If FFmpeg reports that a stream cannot be stored in Matroska, convert the video instead:

ffmpeg -i input.LRF -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mkv

-crf 18 produces high-quality H.264 video; values around 20–23 create smaller files with more visible compression. The optional audio mapping keeps an audio stream when one exists.

Using a graphical converter

Open the LRF file in a desktop converter that uses FFmpeg or another compatible media engine, choose MKV as the output container, select Copy or Passthrough for the video and audio streams when available, and start the conversion. If the program cannot open the file, copy the original high-resolution Sony recording instead; some applications recognize the camera’s master file but not its LRF proxy.

Converting online

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload only footage that is suitable for a third-party service, because the file must leave your device.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Remuxing with -c copy preserves the LRF’s existing quality, but it cannot improve the proxy’s low resolution, bitrate, or compression artifacts. For a better MKV, convert the original high-resolution Sony recording rather than the LRF file.

Some LRF files contain proprietary or unusual stream metadata. If FFmpeg cannot detect them, try opening the file in Sony’s original media software and exporting a standard video first. Do not simply rename the extension unless a media probe confirms that the underlying file is already a supported format.

After conversion, verify duration, audio synchronization, and seeking in an MKV-capable player such as VLC or mpv. Keep the source LRF and the camera’s original recording until the MKV has been checked.
