TRP recordings from digital-TV receivers and personal video recorders often need conversion before an Ogg-based player, editor, or web workflow can use them. Converting the MPEG transport-stream video to OGV produces an Ogg container with codecs such as Theora and Vorbis.

What the TRP format is

In the Video category, TRP usually identifies an MPEG-2 transport stream, often containing MPEG-2 video and AC-3, MPEG, or AAC audio. Set-top boxes, satellite receivers, HDTV recorders, and some DVR software create these files. A TRP file may contain broadcast metadata, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, or recording segments, and some devices use proprietary encryption that prevents normal conversion.

What the OGV format is

OGV is an Ogg video container, commonly used with Theora video and Vorbis audio. It is supported by many open-source media tools and can be useful for archival workflows or applications that specifically request Ogg/Theora. OGV generally has less hardware and browser support than MP4 with H.264, so it is not automatically the best format for general distribution.

How to convert TRP to OGV

Using FFmpeg

  1. Install a current FFmpeg build and place the TRP file in an accessible folder.
  2. Check the streams with ffprobe input.trp. This shows the video codec, audio streams, resolution, frame rate, and interlacing.
  3. Run this command to encode Theora video and Vorbis audio:
    ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogv
  4. Open output.ogv in the intended player or editor and verify audio synchronization, frame rate, subtitles, and the complete duration.

The Theora quality scale runs from 0 to 10; higher values produce better quality and larger files. Use -q:v 8 or -q:v 9 when preserving more detail matters. To deinterlace broadcast footage, add -vf bwdif; for example: ffmpeg -i input.trp -vf bwdif -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogv.

Using 101convert.com

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: select the TRP input, choose OGV as the output, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. This option is practical for non-sensitive recordings; avoid uploading copyrighted, private, or encrypted material unless the service and your rights permit it.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion from MPEG-2 to Theora is a lossy re-encode, so the OGV cannot restore detail already lost in the TRP and may show additional softness or blocking. Selecting a higher Theora quality reduces new losses but increases file size and encoding time.

TRP files with multiple programs or audio tracks require explicit stream selection. Use -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:1? to choose a different audio stream, or omit -map to let FFmpeg select default streams. FFmpeg may not decode a recorder's encrypted or damaged TRP; in that case, export an unprotected recording from the original device first.

OGV commonly carries Theora/Vorbis, while some software expects another codec inside the Ogg container. Confirm the target application's requirements before encoding. Preserve the original TRP because changing containers and codecs removes the ability to recover quality lost during re-encoding.
