Some DVRs and HDTV receivers save recordings as TRP transport-stream files, while video editors and embedded systems may require Motion JPEG output. Converting the recording makes it usable in software that does not decode the original MPEG transport stream.
What the TRP format is
In the video context, TRP usually identifies an MPEG transport stream saved by a digital television receiver, set-top box, surveillance recorder, or DVR. The file commonly contains MPEG-2 or H.264 video, AAC or AC-3 audio, and broadcast timing or program metadata. The .trp extension does not guarantee one codec or a single internal structure, so a file may work in its original recorder but fail in a general-purpose editor.
VLC, MediaInfo, and FFmpeg can often identify the streams. Use ffprobe input.trp to inspect the video codec, resolution, frame rate, interlacing, audio streams, and whether the recording is damaged or encrypted.
What the MJPG format is
MJPG, or Motion JPEG, stores video as a sequence of independent JPEG images. Each frame can be decoded separately, which gives MJPG low editing complexity and broad compatibility with capture hardware, older editing applications, machine-vision software, and some web or embedded workflows.
MJPG generally requires substantially more storage than H.264 or MPEG-2 because JPEG compression is applied independently to every frame. A file named .mjpg may be a raw Motion JPEG stream; many applications instead expect Motion JPEG video inside an AVI container, normally named .avi.
How to convert TRP to MJPG
FFmpeg is the most reliable desktop method because it can demux common MPEG transport streams and encode the decoded frames as Motion JPEG.
- Install FFmpeg from a trusted package source for your operating system.
- Check the source with
ffprobe input.trp. If the file contains several programs or video streams, identify the required stream index. - For a raw MJPEG output file, run
ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:v:0 -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an output.mjpg. - For better compatibility with editors that expect a container, create an AVI file with
ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:v:0 -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an output.avi. - Open the result in the target application and verify frame rate, duration, and aspect ratio. If the application requires audio, encode it separately into a supported container rather than assuming a raw
.mjpgstream can contain audio.
The -q:v value controls JPEG quality in FFmpeg; lower values produce higher quality and larger files. Values from 2 to 5 are a practical starting range. To preserve audio in an AVI output, use -c:a pcm_s16le, for example ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi.
If installing software is not suitable, the file can be converted for free on the 101convert.com website without installing a program.
Quality and compatibility considerations
The conversion decodes the original compressed frames and recompresses them as JPEG, so it cannot restore detail already lost in the TRP recording. Motion JPEG is intra-frame, but it is not lossless; use a lower -q:v value only when the larger output is acceptable.
Interlaced television recordings may show combing artifacts after conversion. Deinterlace during encoding with ffmpeg -i input.trp -vf yadif -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an output.mjpg; omit yadif when the destination workflow requires the original interlaced frames. If the TRP is encrypted, incomplete, or dependent on recorder-specific metadata, FFmpeg may not be able to decode it, and the original recording device may be required for playback or export.
