What the TRP format is

In the Video category, .trp usually identifies an MPEG-2 transport stream containing digital television video and audio. Set-top boxes, PVRs, satellite receivers, and HDTV recording software commonly create TRP files; the files may contain broadcast-resolution video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, or station metadata.

Some receiver-generated TRP files are encrypted or use proprietary indexing. A file may therefore play only in the device’s bundled software even though its extension suggests a standard transport stream. Rename the extension only as a diagnostic step; it does not perform a conversion.

What the F4V format is

F4V is Adobe’s ISO Base Media File Format-based Flash Video container. It is normally used with H.264/AVC video and AAC audio, unlike the older FLV container that commonly stores Sorenson Spark or VP6 video.

F4V can preserve good quality at smaller sizes than MPEG-2 when the video is re-encoded with H.264. It is mainly relevant to legacy Flash-based publishing, archival systems, or applications that explicitly request an .f4v file. Modern browsers do not support Flash Player, so MP4 is usually a better current distribution format unless F4V is required.

How to convert TRP to F4V

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. It reads standard MPEG-2 transport streams, converts the video to H.264, converts incompatible audio to AAC, and writes an F4V container.

1. Install FFmpeg from a trusted desktop package source and place recording.trp in an accessible folder.
2. Inspect the streams with ffprobe recording.trp. Check the video resolution, frame rate, audio codec, and number of programs.
3. Run:

ffmpeg -i recording.trp -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf  cin -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart -f f4v recording.f4v

Replace crf cin with -crf cin? No: the correct command is:

ffmpeg -i recording.trp -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart -f f4v recording.f4v

A CRF value of 18–20 gives higher quality and a larger file; 23 is a general-purpose setting; values around 26–28 reduce size with more visible loss. Use -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? when the TRP contains several programs and only the first video and audio streams should be selected:

ffmpeg -i recording.trp -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f f4v recording.f4v

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting MPEG-2 to H.264 is normally a lossy re-encode; increasing the output bitrate cannot restore detail already lost in the TRP source. Interlaced television recordings may show combing unless deinterlacing is enabled, for example with -vf yadif.

FFmpeg may report errors when a receiver has encrypted the recording, split it into proprietary segments, or damaged its transport-stream tables. In those cases, export the recording through the original receiver or vendor software first. Verify the F4V afterward by checking duration, audio synchronization, subtitles, and the selected program; subtitles and broadcast metadata are not always preserved by the conversion.
