What the TRP format is
In video, .trp usually denotes an MPEG transport stream containing a television recording. Digital set-top boxes, satellite receivers, HDTV DVRs, and some PVR software create TRP files; the stream may contain MPEG-2, H.264, AAC, or broadcast-specific metadata.
TRP is a container, not a single video codec. A file may include interlacing, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, encryption, or damaged broadcast packets, so compatibility depends on the recording device and its codec rather than on the extension alone.
What the VCD format is
Video CD is an optical-disc specification based on MPEG-1 video and MPEG-1 Layer II audio. Standard video dimensions are 352×288 pixels for PAL and 352×240 pixels for NTSC; video is encoded around 1,150 kbps and audio at 44.1 kHz.
VCD is useful for older standalone players, compatible DVD players, and disc-based archival or distribution. It has predictable playback requirements, but its low resolution and fixed bitrate make it unsuitable for preserving HD quality. A VCD normally consists of an MPEG program stream plus a disc image such as .bin and .cue, not merely a renamed video file.
How to convert TRP to VCD
FFmpeg is the most direct desktop converter because its VCD targets set the required MPEG-1 video, audio, frame size, bitrate, frame rate, and audio sampling parameters.
- Install FFmpeg and identify the television standard of the recording or destination player. Use PAL for 25-fps regions and NTSC for 29.97-fps regions.
- For PAL, run
ffmpeg -i input.trp -target pal-vcd output.mpg. For NTSC, runffmpeg -i input.trp -target ntsc-vcd output.mpg. - Review
output.mpgin a media player. Trim unwanted material before conversion if necessary; transcoding an entire recording can produce a file longer than a VCD disc can hold. - Author the MPEG file as a Video CD with VCDImager. For a PAL VCD, use
vcdimager -t pal -c disc.cue -b disc.bin output.mpg; for NTSC, usevcdimager -t ntsc -c disc.cue -b disc.bin output.mpg. - Burn
disc.cueas a disc image with CD-burning software that supports BIN/CUE images. Do not burn the MPEG file as an ordinary data CD, because a VCD player expects the Video CD directory and sector layout.
If FFmpeg reports unsupported codecs, inspect the source with ffprobe input.trp. Encrypted or proprietary DVR recordings may require the original receiver or vendor software to decrypt or export them before FFmpeg can read them.
For a no-install option, 101convert.com provides free online conversion; download a VCD-compatible MPEG result and author it as a Video CD if the service does not create a BIN/CUE disc image.
Quality and compatibility limits
Converting HD TRP footage to VCD is lossy: the image is downscaled to 352-pixel width, high-definition detail is discarded, and interlaced motion may need deinterlacing. Avoid deinterlacing unless the source and player require it, because it can reduce vertical detail.
A standard 74-minute CD holds roughly 74 minutes of VCD video, and an 80-minute CD roughly 80 minutes. Longer recordings must be split across discs or reduced below the normal VCD bitrate, which can make the result non-compliant and less compatible.
The output must use the same PAL or NTSC standard expected by the player. A VCD-compatible MPEG file may play on a computer while still failing on a standalone player if the disc was not authored and burned as a Video CD.
