An EVO file from an HD DVD will not play in a standalone VCD player, which expects a Video CD-compliant MPEG-1 stream and disc structure. Converting it requires downscaling and re-encoding the HD video, then authoring the result as a VCD rather than merely renaming the extension.

What the EVO format is

EVO is the container used for HD DVD video titles. It can hold MPEG-2, H.264/AVC, or VC-1 video, compressed audio, multiple language tracks, subtitles, and navigation-related streams. HD DVD authoring systems such as Sonic Scenarist create EVO files; they are also encountered in HD DVD folders, disc backups, and software such as PowerDVD or WinDVD that plays HD DVD content.

An EVO file is normally much higher resolution and higher bitrate than VCD video. It may also contain several titles or audio tracks, so a converter might require explicit stream selection.

What the VCD format is

VCD is a CD-based video format using MPEG-1 video and MPEG-1 Layer II audio. A standard VCD uses 352×240 pixels at 29.97 fps for NTSC or 352×288 pixels at 25 fps for PAL, with approximately 1,150 kbps video and 224 kbps audio at 44.1 kHz.

VCD is useful for older DVD/VCD players, game consoles, and computers with CD drives. Its main compatibility benefit is the fixed MPEG-1 specification; its limitations are low resolution, visible compression, and a typical capacity of about 74–80 minutes per CD. A compliant disc usually stores the video as AVSEQ01.DAT, so an ordinary MPEG file alone is not yet a finished VCD.

How to actually convert EVO to VCD

FFmpeg can perform the required decode and MPEG-1 re-encode. Install a current desktop build, open a terminal in the folder containing the EVO file, and select the first video and audio streams:

ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -target ntsc-vcd output.mpg

Use the PAL preset for PAL material:

ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -target pal-vcd output.mpg

If the EVO contains another language or commentary track, inspect the streams first with ffmpeg -i input.evo, then change the map values, for example -map 0:a:1. If the source has several programs, identify the required title before encoding; converting the entire container can produce the wrong program or an unexpectedly long file.

The resulting output.mpg is VCD-compatible MPEG-1, but it still needs VCD authoring. With vcdimager, create a BIN/CUE disc image:

vcdimager -t vcd2 -c video.cue -b video.bin output.mpg

Burn the generated CUE/BIN image with CD-burning software that supports disc images. Do not burn output.mpg as a data file if the disc must play in a hardware VCD player.

For a no-installation option, 101convert.com can convert the file online for free when EVO and VCD are offered as selectable formats. An online conversion may produce a VCD-compatible video file rather than a complete BIN/CUE disc image, so authoring and burning can still be required.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion is necessarily lossy: HD video is reduced to VCD resolution and MPEG-1 compression. Converting to VCD cannot preserve HD detail, modern surround audio, subtitles, menus, or advanced codec features. Select a PAL or NTSC output matching the intended player; a region-standard mismatch can cause playback failure or distorted motion.

Some EVO files use encryption or proprietary navigation. FFmpeg may be unable to read protected content or may expose only individual streams. Conversion should be performed only on content you are authorized to access, without bypassing copy protection.
