A TRP recording may need conversion when a legacy player, editor, or media system accepts MPEG-1 video but cannot read a DVR transport-stream file. Because M1V contains video without audio, the conversion also extracts and discards any audio carried by the TRP.

What the TRP format is

TRP is commonly a transport-stream video container produced by HDTV set-top boxes, satellite receivers, DVRs, and personal video recorder software. These files usually contain MPEG-2 or H.264 video, along with audio, subtitles, program metadata, and transport-stream packets.

TRP files often appear when recordings are copied from a television receiver or exported from a proprietary recording system. The extension alone does not identify the exact codec, resolution, encryption, or stream layout, so a converter must inspect and decode the file rather than simply rename it.

What the M1V format is

M1V is an MPEG-1 video elementary stream. It stores compressed video only; it does not provide a normal container for audio, subtitles, chapters, or multiple streams.

M1V is useful with older MPEG-1-compatible players, authoring tools, embedded systems, and editing applications that expect a separate video stream. MPEG-1 has broad legacy compatibility and relatively simple decoding, but it is less efficient than H.264 or newer codecs at comparable quality. Use M1V when the destination specifically requires MPEG-1 video, not merely because the extension is shorter.

How to actually convert TRP to M1V

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop method because it can read common MPEG transport streams and explicitly select the video stream. Install FFmpeg, place the source file in a working folder, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:v:0 -an -c:v mpeg1video -b:v 2000k -pix_fmt yuv420p -f mpeg1video output.m1v

This command selects the first video stream, disables audio with -an, re-encodes the video as MPEG-1, sets an approximate video bitrate, and writes an M1V elementary stream. Replace input.trp and output.m1v with the actual filenames.

For a quality-based encode instead of a target bitrate, use:

ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:v:0 -an -c:v mpeg1video -q:v 2 -pix_fmt yuv420p -f mpeg1video output.m1v

Lower quantizer values generally preserve more detail and produce larger files. If the target device expects Video CD-style dimensions, add an appropriate scaling filter such as -vf scale=352:288 for PAL or -vf scale=352:240 for NTSC, but do not resize unless the destination requires it.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the TRP file, choose M1V as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. The service can only process files that are readable and not protected by DVR encryption.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion to M1V is a lossy re-encode when the TRP contains compressed video; it cannot restore detail already lost in the recording. Avoid repeatedly converting the same material between lossy formats.

The output contains no audio by definition. If audio must be preserved, use a container such as MPEG or MP4 instead, or create a separate audio file and combine it later in an authoring application that supports elementary streams.

Some DVR-generated TRP files use encryption, proprietary indexes, damaged timestamps, or codecs that the selected converter cannot decode. Test the source with ffprobe input.trp; if FFmpeg reports an unknown codec or scrambled data, the original recorder's export function may be required before conversion.
