A DVR recording may be saved as TRP while the destination player, editor, or Windows-based workflow expects an ASF container. Converting it requires reading the MPEG transport stream and usually transcoding its video and audio into codecs that ASF supports reliably.

What the TRP format is

In video workflows, TRP usually identifies an MPEG-2 transport stream, often using the .trp extension. Digital television receivers, satellite set-top boxes, and personal video recorders create TRP files for broadcast or recorded television. The stream may contain MPEG-2 video, H.264 video, AAC, AC-3, or MPEG audio, along with broadcast metadata and multiple programs.

Some devices use proprietary encryption, timestamps, or indexing. A TRP file may therefore play in the original recorder’s software but fail in general-purpose applications even though it contains standard transport-stream data.

What the ASF format is

ASF, or Advanced Systems Format, is a Microsoft media container designed for streaming and indexed playback. It can store audio and video streams, timing information, metadata, and error-recovery data; Windows Media Audio and Windows Media Video codecs are common ASF combinations.

ASF is useful when a legacy Windows application, device, or media server specifically requires .asf. It is less suitable than MP4 or Matroska for modern cross-platform playback, and changing a filename extension does not convert the container.

How to actually convert TRP to ASF

For a local conversion, FFmpeg provides the clearest control over demuxing, codec selection, bitrate, and output compatibility.

  1. Install a current FFmpeg build and confirm that the TRP file opens: ffprobe input.trp.
  2. Inspect the listed streams and note the video resolution, frame rate, audio language, and any unwanted programs or subtitle streams.
  3. Convert to commonly supported Windows Media codecs with:
    ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v wmv2 -b:v 2500k -c:a wmav2 -b:a 128k output.asf
  4. Replace input.trp and output.asf with the actual filenames. Increase -b:v for better quality, or reduce it for a smaller file.
  5. Check the result with ffprobe output.asf and test playback in the application that requires ASF.

For a no-installation conversion, upload the file to 101convert.com, choose ASF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Avoid uploading recordings containing private or restricted material.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

This process normally re-encodes both streams, so it is not lossless. The output cannot restore detail already lost in the DVR recording; use a video bitrate at least comparable to the source when preserving quality matters.

If FFmpeg reports multiple programs, select a specific program instead of blindly mapping every stream, for example -map 0:p:1. If the source audio is AC-3 or AAC, transcoding to wmav2 improves compatibility with older ASF software. Encrypted or vendor-protected TRP recordings must first be exported or decrypted by the original recorder; a general converter cannot bypass that protection.
