Some DVD-authoring and broadcast workflows require an elementary MPEG-2 video stream instead of a TRP transport-stream recording. Converting the file extracts or re-encodes its video as M2V; audio, subtitles, and other TRP streams are not retained in the M2V output.
What the TRP format is
TRP is commonly a recording file based on an MPEG transport stream, usually produced by digital-TV receivers, DVR/PVR devices, HDTV capture software, and set-top boxes. It can contain MPEG-2 or H.264 video together with audio, subtitles, program metadata, and multiple channels.
The extension does not identify the video codec reliably. VLC, MediaInfo, and FFmpeg can inspect many TRP files, but recordings may be encrypted, damaged, or stored with device-specific metadata that general-purpose software cannot decode.
What the M2V format is
M2V is an elementary MPEG-2 video stream, not a complete container. It normally contains only MPEG-2 video frames, so it has no embedded audio, subtitles, chapter data, or general-purpose metadata.
M2V is used by DVD authoring applications, MPEG-2 broadcast workflows, and older editing or muxing tools that expect separate video and audio streams. Its elementary-stream structure can simplify authoring, but it does not reduce quality by itself; quality depends on whether the video is copied or re-encoded.
How to actually convert TRP to M2V
For a no-install option, use the converter on 101convert.com, upload the TRP file, select M2V, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. The service can only process recordings that are not encrypted or otherwise device-locked.
For local conversion, FFmpeg is the most direct tool. First inspect the video stream:
ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_entries stream=codec_name,width,height,r_frame_rate -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 input.trp
If the report shows mpeg2video and the stream is suitable for the target workflow, copy the video without re-encoding:
ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:v:0 -c:v copy -an -f mpeg2video output.m2v
This command selects the first video stream, excludes audio with -an, and writes an elementary MPEG-2 stream. If FFmpeg reports that the input video is H.264, HEVC, or another non-MPEG-2 codec, transcode it instead:
ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:v:0 -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -an -f mpeg2video output.m2v
Use a higher numeric -q:v value for a smaller, lower-quality file. For a DVD-compatible result, specify the required frame size, frame rate, bitrate, and interlacing mode rather than relying on automatic defaults; for example, a North American DVD workflow commonly uses 720×480 at 29.97 fps, while a PAL workflow commonly uses 720×576 at 25 fps.
In a graphical FFmpeg front end, choose the TRP file, select MPEG-2 video as the codec, disable audio, choose an elementary MPEG-2 or M2V output profile, and export. Menu names differ between applications.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Copying an existing MPEG-2 stream avoids generational loss, but it may preserve broadcast dimensions, interlacing, variable frame timing, or packet-level problems that a particular authoring program rejects. Re-encoding an H.264 TRP to M2V introduces generation loss and usually creates a larger file because MPEG-2 is less efficient than newer codecs.
The resulting M2V does not contain the original TRP audio. Keep the source audio and convert it separately to the format required by the authoring application, commonly AC-3, MP2, or PCM, then import the M2V and audio as separate assets. A TRP with multiple programs or camera angles also requires explicit stream selection; -map 0:v:0 takes only the first video stream.
