DVD recorders often save standard-definition recordings as VRO files, but many desktop editors and media players do not recognize DVD-VR containers directly. Converting the recording to OGV makes the video easier to process with open-source tools that support Ogg Theora.

What the VRO format is

VRO is the video container used by DVD recorders operating in DVD-VR mode. It normally contains MPEG-2 video with MPEG audio, AC-3, or LPCM sound, stored as a program stream in a file such as VR_MOVIE.VRO.

DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW camcorders and standalone DVD recorders commonly create VRO files. The disc may also contain control and navigation data that defines titles, chapters, recording order, and editable sections. Copy the entire recording to a local drive before converting; do not work directly from a writable optical disc.

What the OGV format is

OGV is an Ogg-based video container, most commonly carrying Theora video and Vorbis audio. It is supported by FFmpeg, VLC, some Linux media tools, and applications that favor open, patent-unencumbered codecs.

OGV can be useful for open-source projects, archival workflows that require Ogg media, and software that specifically requests Theora video. It is not as broadly supported as MP4, so choose OGV only when the target application or publishing system supports Ogg Theora.

How to convert VRO to OGV

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install a current build, place the VRO file in a working folder, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.VRO -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 4 output.ogv

-q:v 7 gives Theora a quality-based encode; values around 5–8 are suitable for many DVD sources. Lower values improve quality and increase file size. -q:a 4 encodes Vorbis audio at a moderate quality level.

If FFmpeg reports that the VRO input cannot be identified, make a copy and change that copy's extension to .mpg, then retry:

ffmpeg -i recording.mpg -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 4 recording.ogv

Changing the extension does not convert the data; it only helps software that relies on the filename. Keep the original .VRO file unchanged.

DVD recordings are frequently interlaced. Deinterlace during conversion when the OGV will be viewed on a progressive display:

ffmpeg -i input.VRO -vf yadif -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 4 output.ogv

If the file contains more than one audio or video stream, inspect the streams first:

ffmpeg -i input.VRO

Then adjust -map selections, such as -map 0:v:0 for the first video stream and -map 0:a:1 for the second audio stream. If the VRO contains several recorder-defined titles, FFmpeg may expose them as separate programs; convert each required program individually after inspecting the input.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the VRO file, select OGV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. For private recordings, check the service's current file-retention and upload limits before submitting the video.

Quality and compatibility limitations

VRO recordings are usually standard-definition MPEG-2, so converting them to OGV cannot restore detail lost during the original recording. Re-encoding changes both the video and audio streams; it is not a lossless container-only operation.

Preserve the original frame dimensions and frame rate unless the destination requires different values. DVD video commonly uses 720×480 at approximately 29.97 interlaced frames per second for NTSC or 720×576 at 25 interlaced frames per second for PAL. Deinterlacing improves progressive playback but discards some temporal information.

DVD-VR navigation metadata, chapter markers, recorder edit points, subtitles, and menu structures may not survive the conversion. The OGV file contains the selected media stream, not a complete DVD-VR disc. Test the output in the application that will use it, because OGV support and Theora hardware acceleration are less common than support for H.264 in MP4.
