What the AVC format is
In video files, .avc usually identifies a raw H.264/AVC elementary stream. It contains compressed video without the container metadata normally supplied by MP4, MKV, or TS, and it may contain no audio, timestamps, subtitles, or reliable frame-rate information.
Security cameras, hardware encoders, video capture systems, Blu-ray-related tools, and some editing or broadcast utilities can create raw AVC streams. You can inspect one with ffprobe input.avc; a normal result identifies an H.264 video stream but may show missing duration and audio.
What the TRP format is
.trp is commonly used for an MPEG transport stream saved by an HD DVR, satellite receiver, set-top box, or surveillance recorder. The container carries packetized video and audio with timing information; its video may be H.264/AVC or MPEG-2, while audio is often AC-3, AAC, or MPEG audio.
TRP is useful when playback hardware expects transport-stream structure, program tables, and timestamped packets. The extension alone does not define one universal TRP specification: some manufacturers add proprietary indexing, encryption, or naming rules, so a generic MPEG-TS file may work in software but fail on the original recorder.
How to actually convert AVC to TRP
The most reliable desktop method is FFmpeg. If the source is a raw H.264 stream and needs no audio, run:
ffmpeg -f h264 -i input.avc -c:v copy -an -f mpegts output.trp
-f h264 tells FFmpeg how to read the raw AVC input, -c:v copy keeps the existing H.264 bitstream without generational loss, and -f mpegts creates the transport-stream container. The resulting file is technically MPEG-TS with a TRP extension.
If the AVC file is actually a container that already includes audio, omit the raw-input option and preserve compatible streams:
ffmpeg -i input.avc -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v copy -c:a copy -f mpegts output.trp
For a separate audio file, mux it during conversion:
ffmpeg -f h264 -i input.avc -i audio.ac3 -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f mpegts output.trp
If the target device rejects the copied video or audio codec, re-encode to H.264 and AC-3:
ffmpeg -f h264 -i input.avc -i audio.wav -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.trp
Use the source frame rate when raw AVC has no timing information, for example:
ffmpeg -f h264 -framerate 25 -i input.avc -c:v copy -an -f mpegts output.trp
Change 25 to the camera or encoder's actual rate; an incorrect value changes playback speed or duration. On 101convert.com, you can convert the file for free without installing software, provided the service accepts the particular AVC stream and produces a TRP variant compatible with your player.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Stream copying does not reduce H.264 quality, but it cannot create missing audio, timestamps, frame-rate data, or DVR-specific metadata. Re-encoding is only necessary for codec, profile, level, resolution, or audio compatibility and introduces quality loss unless a sufficiently high bitrate is selected.
Test the result with ffprobe output.trp and then on the intended device. If playback works in VLC but not on the DVR, the device may require proprietary TRP headers, a particular MPEG-TS packet size, specific audio codec, encryption, or its own recording index; a generic FFmpeg-created transport stream cannot reproduce those requirements without documentation or a sample recorded by that device.
