Some DVRs, satellite receivers, and media players require recordings in a TRP container instead of a raw H.264 stream. Converting the file packages the video in an MPEG transport stream that those devices can recognize, usually without changing the video quality.

What the H264 format is

H.264, also called AVC, is a video codec rather than a complete container format. Files ending in .h264 commonly contain an elementary H.264 video stream with no container metadata and often no audio.

Security cameras, DVRs, screen-recording tools, FFmpeg, x264-based encoders, and some editing or broadcasting software can create raw H.264 files. You may encounter them when exporting footage from surveillance equipment or when a recording application saves the encoded video stream directly.

What the TRP format is

TRP is commonly an MPEG-2 Transport Stream file used by digital television receivers, set-top boxes, personal video recorders, and some media players. A TRP stream can contain H.264 video together with audio such as AAC, AC-3, or MPEG audio, plus transport-stream packets and program information.

Its main advantage for this conversion is that it can package an existing H.264 stream without recompressing it. The .trp extension is not a guarantee of one universal specification: individual devices may require particular audio codecs, packet structures, timestamps, or stream identifiers.

How to convert H264 to TRP

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is suitable when the target device accepts a standard MPEG transport stream. Open a terminal in the folder containing the source file and run:

ffmpeg -i input.h264 -c:v copy -f mpegts output.trp

The -c:v copy option remuxes the H.264 video without re-encoding it. This preserves the source quality and is faster than transcoding.

A raw .h264 file normally has no audio, so the resulting TRP may contain video only. If the audio is in a separate file, mux it with the video:

ffmpeg -i input.h264 -i audio.ac3 -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f mpegts output.trp

If the audio codec is not accepted by the target device, encode it during muxing; for example:

ffmpeg -i input.h264 -i audio.wav -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 -c:v copy -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.trp

Replace the filenames with the actual inputs. Use ffprobe input.h264 or ffprobe output.trp to inspect detected streams and codecs.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the H.264 file, select TRP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file. Check the resulting file on the intended DVR or player because device-specific TRP requirements can differ.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Remuxing with -c:v copy does not reduce video quality, but it also does not repair damaged H.264 data, missing timestamps, or an unsupported H.264 profile. A conversion that reports success can still fail on a device that expects a proprietary TRP layout.

If the target device rejects the output, identify its required video, audio, resolution, frame rate, and transport-stream settings. Re-encoding video is possible with -c:v libx264, but it changes quality and increases processing time. A raw H.264 input with no audio cannot produce an audio track merely by changing its container.
