A .264 file is often a raw H.264 video stream that some DVRs, surveillance systems, and encoders cannot open directly. Converting it to .trp places the video in an MPEG transport stream container expected by certain set-top boxes, recorders, and playback software.

What the 264 format is

.264 usually contains an elementary H.264/AVC bitstream without a general-purpose container. Surveillance cameras, NVRs, hardware encoders, x264, and FFmpeg can create this type of file. Because it may contain only encoded video, it often lacks audio, timestamps, subtitles, program metadata, and a reliable duration until a tool parses the stream.

What the TRP format is

.trp commonly identifies an MPEG-2 transport stream used by digital television equipment, DVRs, set-top boxes, and some media players. A TRP file can carry H.264 video together with audio, timestamps, subtitles, and other transport-stream data. The extension is device-specific rather than a complete specification, so different devices may require different codecs, resolutions, audio formats, or packet structures.

How to convert 264 to TRP

For a direct container conversion, FFmpeg can copy the H.264 stream without recompressing it:

ffmpeg -f h264 -i input.264 -c:v copy -f mpegts output.trp

  1. Install a current FFmpeg build.
  2. Check that the source is a raw H.264 stream with ffprobe -f h264 input.264.
  3. Replace input.264 with the source filename and output.trp with the destination filename.
  4. Play the result or test it on the target device.

This command creates an MPEG transport stream and preserves the encoded video, so it is fast and avoids another generation of quality loss. If the target device rejects the result, transcode to a more compatible H.264 profile and pixel format:

ffmpeg -f h264 -i input.264 -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -profile:v main -level 4.0 -f mpegts output.trp

A raw .264 file normally has no audio to retain. If you have a separate supported audio track, include it explicitly, for example: ffmpeg -f h264 -i input.264 -i audio.aac -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f mpegts output.trp. Use -shortest when the streams have different lengths.

You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the video, select TRP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Stream copying does not improve a damaged source and may preserve missing timestamps or unusual H.264 parameters. Some older TRP devices expect MPEG-2 video rather than H.264; in that case, use a device-specific MPEG-2 profile instead of libx264, for example -c:v mpeg2video, and set the required resolution and bitrate.

TRP playback compatibility depends on the recorder or television model. Verify the required video codec, frame rate, audio codec, transport-stream packet size, and maximum bitrate in the device documentation. A file with a .trp extension is not guaranteed to work merely because it contains an MPEG transport stream.
