Raw .264 video is often produced by CCTV systems and specialist capture software, while older players and editing workflows may require a DivX-compatible file. Converting it requires decoding the H.264 stream and re-encoding it as MPEG-4 Part 2, usually in an AVI-compatible DivX container.
What the 264 format is
A .264 file normally contains a raw H.264/AVC elementary video stream rather than a complete multimedia container. It may have no filename metadata, audio track, duration index, or reliable frame-rate information.
CCTV recorders, surveillance cameras, DVR export tools, video encoders, and some professional capture applications create this format. You may encounter it after exporting footage from a security system or receiving an H.264 stream intended for another program. The actual frame rate may need to be supplied manually if it is not stored in the stream.
What the DIVX format is
.divx commonly identifies a DivX video file using MPEG-4 Part 2 video, often stored in an AVI-compatible structure. DivX was designed for efficient standard- and high-definition video playback on compatible software, televisions, DVD players, and media devices.
DivX can be useful when a legacy player or editing application supports MPEG-4 Part 2 but does not support H.264. It is not a lossless conversion target: the H.264 stream must be decoded and encoded again, which can reduce detail and increase file size compared with the original.
How to actually convert 264 to DIVX
For a local conversion, FFmpeg is suitable because it can read raw H.264 streams and encode MPEG-4 video with the DivX-compatible DX50 four-character code.
- Install FFmpeg and place the source file in an accessible folder.
- Determine the source frame rate from the camera or recorder settings. If it was 25 frames per second, run:
ffmpeg -f h264 -framerate 25 -i input.264 -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DX50 -q:v 4 -an output.divx
Replace 25 with the recorded frame rate. The -q:v 4 setting uses quality-based encoding; values around 3–5 usually provide a practical balance, while lower values increase quality and file size. Use a fixed bitrate instead when a device requires one, for example -b:v 2000k.
Raw .264 normally contains no audio. If a separate audio file exists, add it as another input and encode it to MP3 for broad AVI/DivX compatibility:
ffmpeg -f h264 -framerate 25 -i input.264 -i audio.wav -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DX50 -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k -shortest output.divx
For a no-installation conversion, use the converter on 101convert.com and select DIVX as the output format. Uploading may be unsuitable for confidential surveillance footage, and the service cannot recover audio that was never present in the .264 file.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Choose the correct frame rate before encoding; an incorrect value can make playback too fast, too slow, or progressively out of sync with separately supplied audio. FFmpeg can usually read the frame dimensions from H.264 parameter sets, but a damaged or incomplete CCTV export may fail without the recorder's original metadata.
Use .avi instead of .divx if the destination application rejects the DIVX extension while accepting the same MPEG-4 Part 2 stream. Some older devices also require a specific resolution, maximum bitrate, packed-B-frame setting, or MP3 audio format, so test the converted file on the target hardware before converting a large archive.
