Older mobile phones, MMS gateways, and video applications may require a .3gp file instead of an H.264 stream or modern MP4 video. Conversion can also reduce the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match the limited playback capabilities of legacy 3GPP devices.
What the H264 format is
H.264, also called AVC, is a video compression standard used by smartphones, digital cameras, screen recorders, surveillance systems, video editors, and streaming software. It is commonly stored inside MP4, MOV, MKV, or TS containers; a file ending in .h264 is often a raw H.264 elementary stream with no container metadata and usually no audio.
Programs such as FFmpeg, OBS Studio, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, cameras, and phones can create H.264 video. A raw stream may not contain reliable duration, frame-rate, audio, or orientation information, so those values may need to be supplied during conversion.
What the 3GPP format is
3GPP is a multimedia container usually identified by .3gp. It was designed for mobile phones and cellular networks, especially older devices and MMS workflows. A 3GP file can contain H.264 or older H.263/MPEG-4 Part 2 video, with AAC or AMR audio depending on the device profile.
Its smaller typical frame sizes, lower bitrates, and mobile-oriented codecs make it suitable for legacy phones and bandwidth-limited playback. The extension alone does not guarantee compatibility: some older phones accept only H.263 video with AMR-NB audio, while newer devices may accept H.264 and AAC in a 3GP container.
How to actually convert H264 to 3GPP
For a quick conversion without installing software, use the converter on 101convert.com and select the H.264 input and 3GPP or .3gp output. Check the resulting file on the target phone or application because 3GP codec support varies by device.
FFmpeg provides more control over codecs and mobile-compatible settings:
- Install FFmpeg and open a terminal in the folder containing the source file.
- If the source is a raw H.264 stream, determine its actual frame rate. The following example assumes 30 frames per second and creates a small, broadly compatible video with no audio:
ffmpeg -f h264 -framerate 30 -i input.h264 -vf scale=320:-2 -r 15 -c:v libx264 -profile:v baseline -level 3.0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -an output.3gp - If the input is a container such as MP4 and includes audio, use the container as the input and encode audio for the 3GP file:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf scale=320:-2 -r 15 -c:v libx264 -profile:v baseline -level 3.0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 64k output.3gp - Replace
input.h264orinput.mp4with the actual filename. Openoutput.3gpin the intended player and verify both video and audio.
For very old phones that reject H.264 inside 3GP, encode H.263 video and AMR-NB audio instead, if the installed FFmpeg build provides those encoders:ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf scale=176:144 -r 15 -c:v h263 -b:v 192k -c:a libopencore_amrnb -ar 8000 -ac 1 -b:a 12.2k output.3gp
Quality and compatibility limitations
Changing .h264 to .3gp is not a format conversion by itself: 3GP is a container, whereas H.264 is a video codec. The video must be remuxed into a compatible container or re-encoded when its existing codec, profile, resolution, frame rate, or audio format is unsupported.
Raw H.264 input requires a correct frame rate; an incorrect value changes playback speed and duration. Scaling to dimensions divisible by two avoids pixel-format errors, while 320×240 or 176×144 at 15 frames per second is more compatible with older mobile hardware than modern HD settings. Re-encoding reduces quality, so retain the original file for archival use.
