Some audio players, libraries, or archives accept Musepack but not Dolby Digital AC3, so an AC3 soundtrack may need conversion before playback or storage. The process decodes the original lossy stream and encodes it again, producing a new lossy file rather than a bit-for-bit copy.

What the AC3 format is

AC3, also called Dolby Digital, is a lossy audio codec developed by Dolby Laboratories for efficient stereo and multichannel delivery. It is common in DVD and Blu-ray soundtracks, broadcast television, cinema mixes, and audio streams inside containers such as .VOB, .MKV, and .TS.

AC3 can contain mono, stereo, or 5.1-channel audio: five full-range channels plus a low-frequency effects channel. Typical bit rates range from 192 to 640 kbps, although the supported rate depends on the application and delivery format. AC3 may carry Dolby metadata such as dialogue normalization and dynamic-range controls; these settings are not reliably preserved when the audio is re-encoded as MPC.

What the MPC format is

MPC, or Musepack, is a lossy audio codec designed primarily for high-quality music compression. Its encoder normally uses quality-based settings instead of a fixed target bit rate, allowing the output size to vary with the complexity of the source.

Musepack can provide a useful quality-to-size ratio for compatible desktop players and personal archives, but support is much narrower than for MP3, AAC, Opus, or FLAC. MPC stores audio only; it does not retain video, DVD menus, subtitles, chapters, or other container features from a video source.

Convert AC3 to MPC with FFmpeg and mpcenc

For a desktop conversion, use FFmpeg to decode AC3 and the official Musepack command-line encoder, mpcenc, to create the MPC file. Install both applications from trusted desktop packages and confirm that their executable folders are available in the command shell.

1. Inspect a standalone file with ffprobe input.ac3 if you need to check its duration, sample rate, or channel layout.
2. Decode the AC3 stream to an uncompressed WAV file:
   ffmpeg -i input.ac3 -c:a pcm_s16le intermediate.wav
3. Encode the WAV as Musepack using a quality-based setting:
   mpcenc --quality 7 intermediate.wav output.mpc
4. Check output.mpc in a Musepack-compatible player or inspect it with ffprobe output.mpc. Delete intermediate.wav after verification if you no longer need the intermediate.

If the AC3 stream is inside a video file, select the intended audio stream explicitly. For example, the first audio stream in an MKV can be extracted with ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:a:0 -c:a pcm_s16le intermediate.wav. Use ffmpeg -i input.mkv first when the file contains multiple language tracks or commentary streams.

--quality 7 is a typical Musepack setting, but option names and supported ranges can vary between mpcenc releases; run mpcenc --help to verify the installed version. Higher quality generally creates larger files. Quality and compatibility limits

AC3 is already lossy, so decoding it and encoding it as MPC adds another generation of compression. If a lossless original such as WAV, FLAC, or the source production audio exists, encode the MPC file from that instead. Increasing the Musepack quality cannot restore detail removed during AC3 encoding.

The conversion can retain the decoded channel count, but some MPC players downmix multichannel audio or do not support multichannel Musepack at all. Verify the channel layout, duration, and playback behavior after conversion, especially for 5.1 material.

The WAV intermediate is uncompressed and can consume hundreds of megabytes for a long soundtrack. Tags, cover art, chapters, album information, and AC3-specific Dolby metadata may be lost; copy supported tags afterward with a Musepack-aware tag editor if needed.
