What the M4R format is
M4R is an MPEG-4 audio file identified by the .m4r extension and primarily used for iPhone ringtones. It normally contains AAC audio, so it is substantially smaller than uncompressed AIF while retaining suitable quality for a short ringtone. Changing an AIF filename to .m4r does not perform a conversion; the audio must be encoded as AAC and placed in an MPEG-4 container.
Convert with FFmpeg
FFmpeg provides a direct, repeatable method and is useful for batch processing. Open a terminal in the folder containing the source file and run:

Replace input.aif with the actual filename. The -t 30 option limits the output to 30 seconds, which matches the traditional iPhone ringtone limit. Use a shorter duration when necessary, or remove -t 30 if the target software accepts longer files. The -vn option excludes video, -c:a aac selects AAC encoding, and -b:a 256k sets the audio bitrate.
For a smaller file, use -b:a 128k. To preserve the entire source rather than trimming it, run:
ffmpeg -i input.aif -vn -c:a aac -b:a 256k output.m4r
FFmpeg can also trim from a specific start point. For example, -ss 12 -t 30 starts at 12 seconds and exports up to 30 seconds. Edit and select the final section before encoding when accurate musical timing matters.
Convert with an audio editor
Use Audacity or another desktop editor to import the file through File → Import → Audio, remove unwanted sections, and apply fades. Export as AAC in an MPEG-4 container, commonly shown as M4A, through File → Export Audio. If the editor cannot export AAC/MPEG-4 directly, save the edited audio as WAV and use FFmpeg for the final conversion.
When the exported .m4a file contains AAC audio, changing only its extension to .m4r is usually sufficient because both extensions can identify MPEG-4 audio; it is not a substitute for AAC encoding. Verify the codec and container with MediaInfo or FFmpeg before transferring the file.
