iPhones use .m4r files for custom ringtones, while recording and audio-editing software often produces .aif or .aiff files. Converting the recording creates a shorter, AAC-based ringtone that can be transferred to compatible Apple software and devices.

What the AIF format is

AIF, also called AIFF, is an audio container developed by Apple and widely used by music-production, recording, and editing software. It commonly stores uncompressed PCM audio, preserving the source quality but producing much larger files than AAC or MP3. Files with .aif or .aiff extensions can come from Logic Pro, GarageBand, Audacity, Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, digital recorders, and older Mac workflows.

What the M4R format is

M4R is an MPEG-4 audio file identified by the .m4r extension and primarily used for iPhone ringtones. It normally contains AAC audio, so it is substantially smaller than uncompressed AIF while retaining suitable quality for a short ringtone. Changing an AIF filename to .m4r does not perform a conversion; the audio must be encoded as AAC and placed in an MPEG-4 container.

Convert with FFmpeg

FFmpeg provides a direct, repeatable method and is useful for batch processing. Open a terminal in the folder containing the source file and run:

ffmpeg -i input.aif -t 30 -vn -c:a aac -b:a 256k output.m4r

Replace input.aif with the actual filename. The -t 30 option limits the output to 30 seconds, which matches the traditional iPhone ringtone limit. Use a shorter duration when necessary, or remove -t 30 if the target software accepts longer files. The -vn option excludes video, -c:a aac selects AAC encoding, and -b:a 256k sets the audio bitrate.

For a smaller file, use -b:a 128k. To preserve the entire source rather than trimming it, run:

ffmpeg -i input.aif -vn -c:a aac -b:a 256k output.m4r

FFmpeg can also trim from a specific start point. For example, -ss 12 -t 30 starts at 12 seconds and exports up to 30 seconds. Edit and select the final section before encoding when accurate musical timing matters.

Convert with an audio editor

Use Audacity or another desktop editor to import the file through File → Import → Audio, remove unwanted sections, and apply fades. Export as AAC in an MPEG-4 container, commonly shown as M4A, through File → Export Audio. If the editor cannot export AAC/MPEG-4 directly, save the edited audio as WAV and use FFmpeg for the final conversion.

When the exported .m4a file contains AAC audio, changing only its extension to .m4r is usually sufficient because both extensions can identify MPEG-4 audio; it is not a substitute for AAC encoding. Verify the codec and container with MediaInfo or FFmpeg before transferring the file.

• If a device rejects the file, check that the extension is exactly .m4r, confirm the AAC codec and MPEG-4 container, verify the duration, and try re-encoding with a standard AAC profile.
