How to convert mka to m4r file

  • Audio

iPhone custom-ringtone workflows use M4R, while recordings and archived audio are often stored in MKA. Converting the file extracts the required audio track, trims it to the ringtone limit, and encodes it as AAC in an MPEG-4 container.

What MKA contains

MKA is the Matroska audio container, identified by the .mka extension. It can hold one or more audio streams, chapters, tags, cover art, and codecs such as FLAC, Opus, Vorbis, AAC, or MP3. It is used for audio archives, concert recordings, movie or video soundtrack extraction, and files that need multiple tracks or extensive metadata.

Because MKA describes a container rather than one specific codec, conversion may require decoding the source and re-encoding it. If the file has multiple streams, select the intended track instead of converting the first stream automatically.

What M4R is used for

M4R is the filename extension commonly used for iPhone ringtones. Its contents are normally an MPEG-4 audio file containing AAC audio; the extension distinguishes a ringtone from a general .m4a audio file in Apple device workflows. AAC provides smaller files than uncompressed PCM while retaining suitable quality for a short ringtone.

An M4R file does not bypass iPhone ringtone restrictions. Custom ringtones generally need to be no longer than 30 seconds, and the finished file must still be imported through an Apple-supported workflow such as Finder, Apple Music device syncing, or GarageBand. Changing an extension without creating a compatible MPEG-4/AAC file does not perform the conversion.

Convert it on 101convert.com

  1. Open the MKA-to-M4R converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .mka file and choose M4R as the output format.
  3. If trimming or stream-selection options are available, select the desired audio track and keep the clip at or below 30 seconds.
  4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .m4r file.
  5. Play the file before importing it to the iPhone. Uploading a file to an online converter sends its contents to that service, so use a desktop workflow for confidential recordings.

This option requires no installed software and is suitable when the MKA contains a single ordinary audio stream. A file with unusual codecs, several tracks, or precise editing requirements is better handled locally.

Convert with FFmpeg

FFmpeg provides stream selection, exact trimming, and explicit AAC settings. The following command selects the first audio stream, starts at the beginning, limits the output to 30 seconds, and encodes AAC at 128 kbps:

ffmpeg -i input.mka -map 0:a:0 -t 30 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 output.m4r

Replace 0:a:0 with the required stream index when the MKA contains multiple tracks. Use -ss 00:01:15 before -i for a fast seek to an approximate starting point, or place it after -i when frame-accurate trimming matters. Adjust -b:a to the desired bitrate; 96–192 kbps is generally sufficient for a short voice or music ringtone.

If the source already contains compatible AAC audio, stream copying can avoid another lossy encode, but it is not valid for every MKA-to-MP4 combination. Re-encoding with AAC is the safer compatibility choice:

ffmpeg -i input.mka -map 0:a:0 -t 30 -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.m4r

Edit before exporting

Audacity can be useful for removing silence, applying a fade, and selecting a precise excerpt when its FFmpeg import support is installed. Use File → Import to open the MKA, edit the waveform, then export AAC or M4A. If the exported file is a valid MPEG-4 file containing AAC, changing .m4a to .m4r changes the naming convention only; it is not a substitute for encoding incompatible audio.

VLC can extract or convert many MKA streams through Media → Convert/Save, but it offers less control over track selection, trimming, and AAC parameters than FFmpeg. It is suitable for basic extraction, not for reliably preparing a ringtone from a complex multi-track file.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Converting FLAC, Opus, Vorbis, or another lossy source to AAC can reduce quality; converting an already lossy file does not restore missing detail.
  • Use a normal, unprotected AAC-in-MPEG-4 output. DRM-protected audio and unsupported codecs cannot be made compatible by renaming the extension.
  • Keep the original MKA if it is an archive or lossless master; treat M4R as a delivery copy for the phone.
  • Check the output duration, audio track, volume, and start/end points before device import. A valid M4R file may still be rejected if it exceeds the ringtone limit or uses an incompatible container.
