How to convert mp3 to m4r file

  • Audio
An iPhone ringtone workflow may require an .m4r file instead of an .mp3, so the audio must be encoded in a compatible format and usually trimmed to 30 seconds or less. The converted file can then be imported through Finder, Apple Devices, or GarageBand, depending on the device and operating system.

What the MP3 format is

MP3 is a lossy audio format that reduces file size by discarding less-audible sound information. Phones, music players, recording applications, editing software, websites, and personal audio libraries commonly use .mp3 files because they offer broad compatibility and relatively small sizes. MP3 is not the ringtone format expected by some Apple workflows.

What the M4R format is

M4R is the filename extension used for many MPEG-4 ringtone files. A compatible M4R normally contains AAC audio in an MP4 container and is closely related to an .m4a audio file. AAC can provide smaller files than uncompressed audio at comparable perceived quality, while the M4R extension identifies the file for Apple ringtone workflows.

For reliable iPhone use, encode the audio as AAC and keep it at 30 seconds or less. A longer file may be accepted by some software but can fail during ringtone import. Changing an extension does not change the codec or container.

How to convert the file

Using 101convert.com: Upload the MP3, choose M4R as the output format, select a segment of 30 seconds or less if trimming is available, start the conversion, and download the resulting .m4r file. This option requires no software installation. Do not upload audio containing confidential material unless the service is suitable for that data, and process copyrighted recordings only when you have permission.

Using FFmpeg: FFmpeg provides repeatable conversion and precise trimming. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the source file, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -t 30 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f ipod ringtone.m4r

This takes the first 30 seconds. To begin at 1 minute and 15 seconds, use:

ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -ss 00:01:15 -t 30 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f ipod ringtone.m4r

Replace input.mp3 with the actual filename. Use -b:a 192k for a higher AAC bitrate when the source justifies it; a higher bitrate cannot restore detail already removed by MP3 encoding. Choose a start point that avoids silence or an unwanted fade-in.

Using desktop audio software: In Audacity, open File → Import → Audio, select no more than 30 seconds, then use File → Export Audio. Export as AAC in an MPEG-4 container, commonly presented as M4A, and change the resulting .m4a extension to .m4r only after confirming that the file contains AAC audio. Some Audacity installations require the FFmpeg support component for AAC or M4A export.

Quality and compatibility limits

MP3-to-AAC conversion applies lossy compression a second time. It cannot improve the source, and a low-bitrate MP3 may develop additional artifacts. Use the original lossless file or the highest-quality source available when audio quality matters.

Renaming song.mp3 to song.m4r leaves an MP3 stream inside the file and can cause import failure. If an M4R is rejected, inspect it with MediaInfo or run:

ffprobe ringtone.m4r

The file should report an AAC audio stream and an MPEG-4/MP4 container. After conversion, transfer and assign the ringtone through the Apple workflow supported by the device: newer systems commonly use Finder or Apple Devices, while GarageBand can create and export a ringtone directly on an iPhone.
