Convert MP3 to ALS

An MP3 needs this treatment when it must become part of an editable Ableton Live project for arrangement, looping, effects, or automation. The result is an Ableton Live Set, not a new playable audio file.

What the MP3 format is

MP3 is a lossy, compressed audio format used for music downloads, streaming files, podcasts, voice recordings, and general playback. It is supported by media players, phones, browsers, and most audio workstations, but its encoder permanently removes audio data to reduce file size. MP3 is therefore less suitable than WAV or AIFF as a production or mastering source.

What the ALS format is

.als is Ableton Live's Live Set project format, not an audio codec. It stores the set's tracks, clips, timing, mixer configuration, effects, automation, warp settings, and references to audio files. The audio files normally remain in the project folder rather than being embedded in the ALS file itself.

An ALS project can be opened and edited in Ableton Live, but it cannot normally be played by a standard media player. It is useful for arranging the imported MP3 with other clips, applying processing, changing timing, and creating a new mix.

How to create an ALS project from an MP3

Ableton Live is the appropriate desktop software because ALS is a proprietary DAW project format. Online audio converters such as CloudConvert or Zamzar can convert audio codecs, but they do not create a functional Ableton Live project with tracks and editable clip settings; no online converter is recommended for this task.

1. Open Ableton Live and create a new Live Set with File → New Live Set, or open an existing set.
2. Drag the MP3 from your file manager into an audio track in Session View or Arrangement View. Live analyzes the file and creates an audio clip.
3. Check the clip's start and end points, project tempo, warp mode, transposition, fades, and gain. Disable warping or choose a different warp mode if Live changes the timing or character of the recording.
4. Save the set with File → Save Live Set As and choose a project name and location. Live creates or uses a project folder containing the .als file.
5. To make the set portable, choose File → Collect All and Save, then confirm copying the external audio file when prompted. Keep the resulting project folder intact when moving or sharing it.

The ALS file contains the editing instructions and project structure; it does not replace the source MP3 or automatically create an exported mix. To produce a playable file, use File → Export Audio/Video and select WAV, AIFF, or MP3.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Importing an MP3 into Live cannot restore data discarded during MP3 encoding. If the source is available, use the original WAV, AIFF, or another lossless file for editing, mixing, and mastering. Exporting the result to MP3 introduces another lossy encoding step.

Without Collect All and Save, moving or renaming the MP3 can cause a missing-file warning when the set is opened. A set may also depend on installed third-party plug-ins, samples, Max for Live devices, and Ableton Packs. Live versions generally open older sets, but saving a set in a newer version can prevent it from opening in an older version, and unavailable devices may be replaced or disabled.
