A legacy Adobe Audition or Cool Edit installation may require an .ses session so it can reopen an editable multitrack project. An MP3 cannot be converted into SES as a standalone audio file; the practical result is an SES project that references the MP3.
MP3 and SES files
MP3 is a lossy compressed audio format used for music downloads, podcasts, voice recordings, and portable playback. It usually contains one encoded audio program, such as a stereo song or mono voice recording, plus optional tags; it does not retain track layout, clip timing, automation, effects chains, or multitrack editing data.
SES is the legacy multitrack session format used by Cool Edit and older Adobe Audition versions. It stores project instructions including tracks, clip placement, fades, envelopes, effects, and references to source audio files. Its main advantage is editability in compatible legacy software, while its small size comes from storing project data rather than duplicating the audio.
An SES file is not a playable replacement for an MP3. Media players, phones, and most audio converters cannot open it as audio. Current Adobe Audition releases create .sesx sessions; use legacy .ses only when the receiving software explicitly requires it.
Creating an SES project from an MP3
Use Adobe Audition 3 or the specific Cool Edit/Audition version required by the recipient. Generic desktop converters and online audio converters cannot create a reliable SES session because they do not create Audition-specific tracks and source-file references. Online services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar can convert audio formats, but they are not suitable for making usable SES projects.
- Create a project folder, such as
C:\AudioProjects\song_session\, and copy the source MP3 into it before creating the session. - In Adobe Audition 3, choose File → New Session. Set the session sample rate to the target project's requirement, commonly 44.1 kHz for music or 48 kHz for video work.
- Import the MP3 into the Files panel, then drag it onto a multitrack track. The clip can now be trimmed, moved, processed, and mixed within the session.
- Choose File → Save Session As and save the project as
song.ses. - Transfer the SES file and its source MP3 together. If the target installation reports a missing source file, use its relink or locate-file prompt and select the copied MP3.
Use the same legacy application version as the recipient where possible. SES compatibility can vary between Cool Edit and Audition releases, and Adobe Audition 3 is discontinued 32-bit software; it may run on some 64-bit Windows systems but is not supported on current platforms.
Quality and delivery limits
Importing an MP3 into an SES project does not improve audio quality. Exporting the clip to WAV avoids another lossy encode during further editing, but it cannot recover information removed by MP3 compression.
For a recipient who needs playback rather than editing, export a mixdown with File → Export → Audio Mix Down as WAV or MP3. Send the SES file only when the recipient needs the editable legacy session, and send the complete project folder rather than the .ses file alone.
If the destination uses current Adobe Audition, create and share an .sesx session instead. Test a legacy SES file in the recipient's software before relying on it for a production handoff.
