  • Audio

Source format: MP3

MP3 is a widely supported lossy audio format used for music, podcasts, and other sound files. It stores the actual audio data.

Target format: PLS

PLS is not an audio format. It is a playlist file that stores references to one or more audio files or streams, plus optional metadata such as track titles and lengths.

Can mp3 be converted to pls?

Not in the usual sense. You do not convert the audio inside an MP3 into PLS. Instead, you create a PLS playlist that points to one or more MP3 files. The MP3 files themselves remain unchanged.

How to create a PLS playlist

You can create a PLS file with desktop software or by editing a text file manually.

  1. Choose the MP3 files you want to reference in the playlist.
  2. Open a playlist-capable app such as VLC media player, Winamp, foobar2000, or MediaMonkey.
  3. Load the MP3 files and arrange them in the order you want.
  4. Use the app’s export or save option, such as File → Save Playlist As or Playlist → Export.
  5. Select PLS as the output format and save the file with the .pls extension.
  6. Open the saved playlist in a compatible player to confirm the links work.

In VLC, for example, you can open the MP3 with Media → Open File, add it to the playlist, then save the playlist in PLS format if your version offers that export option.

Manual PLS example

You can also create a PLS file in a plain text editor. A simple PLS file may look like this:

[playlist]
NumberOfEntries=1
File1=track1.mp3
Title1=Track 1
Length1=215
Version=2

Save the file as myplaylist.pls using plain text encoding.

Online and desktop options

Desktop software is usually the most reliable option because it gives you better control over file paths and playlist order. If you only need a quick playlist from a list of tracks or URLs, some online playlist generators can create PLS files, but availability and quality vary. Reputable desktop choices include VLC media player, foobar2000, and MediaMonkey.

Compatibility and limitations

PLS stores file paths or URLs, so if you move the MP3 files after creating the playlist, the links may break unless you update the paths. Using relative paths can help when the playlist and audio files stay together in the same folder structure.

PLS is supported by many players, especially older and streaming-focused software, but some modern apps prefer M3U or M3U8. If you need the broadest compatibility, consider whether M3U is a better choice for your playlist.

Bottom line: MP3 to PLS means creating a playlist that references MP3 files, not converting audio data.
