A notation editor, hardware keyboard, or sequencer may require editable MIDI rather than a rendered MP3 recording. The conversion transcribes detected notes and rhythms, so it is useful for changing instruments or tempo but cannot recover the original performance data perfectly.

What the MP3 format is

MP3, or MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer III, is a lossy compressed audio format. Phones, music players, streaming services, DAWs, video editors, and audio recorders commonly use .mp3 files.

An MP3 stores a finished waveform that may combine vocals, instruments, drums, effects, and mastering. It does not retain the original MIDI note numbers, instrument assignments, tempo map, or separate tracks used to produce the recording.

What the MIDI format is

MIDI is performance and control data rather than recorded sound. A Standard MIDI File can contain note pitches, velocities, durations, controller changes, program changes, tempo events, and one or more tracks. A synthesizer, sampler, notation application, or virtual instrument generates the audible result.

MIDI files are normally much smaller than MP3 files and allow independent editing of notes, timing, key, tempo, instruments, and arrangement. Use .mid or .midi when the destination is a DAW, notation program, arranger keyboard, hardware sequencer, or other MIDI-compatible device.

How to perform the conversion

Melodyne provides the most control for desktop transcription. Its Melodic algorithm suits a single vocal, bass line, or other monophonic part; its polyphonic algorithms, available in the editions that support them, analyze chords and piano more effectively than a monophonic setting.

  1. Open the MP3 in Melodyne and choose the algorithm that matches the source: Melodic for one note at a time, Polyphonic for chords, or a percussive algorithm for drum material.
  2. Run the analysis and inspect the detected blobs or notes. Correct octave errors, split wrongly joined notes, and delete detections caused by bleed, reverb, distortion, or background instruments.
  3. Use the version's MIDI export command, normally File → Export MIDI, and save the result as song.mid. If the source contains several instruments, export or process isolated parts separately when possible.
  4. Open the MIDI file in a DAW or notation program, assign instruments, and quantize only the timing that needs correction. MIDI export does not embed the original MP3 audio.

Basic Pitch is a free, open-source alternative from Spotify. Its transcription system supports polyphonic notes, pitch bends, and note velocities, although isolated instruments generally produce cleaner results than a complete master. Use the official web demo for a short file: upload the audio, wait for transcription, and download the generated MIDI. For local processing, install the documented package and run a command such as basic-pitch output-folder input.mp3; command syntax and supported input formats can vary by release.

The web demo sends the recording to a third-party service. Use the local version for unreleased, private, or contractually restricted material, subject to the recording owner's rights.

Ableton Live can also create MIDI from imported audio in supported versions. Import the MP3, right-click the audio clip, and choose Convert Melody to New MIDI Track for a lead line, Convert Harmony to New MIDI Track for chords, or Convert Drums to New MIDI Track for percussion. Review the resulting clip and remove false notes; these functions work best with isolated stems rather than a mastered stereo mix.

Quality and compatibility limits

Transcription accuracy depends primarily on the arrangement, not the MP3 bitrate. A clean monophonic melody is usually the easiest source. Full mixes containing vocals, chords, drums, reverb, distortion, and overlapping instruments can produce missing notes, extra notes, incorrect octaves, and badly grouped events.

Use the highest-quality source available. Converting a low-bitrate MP3 to WAV before analysis cannot restore information removed by MP3 compression, although some applications require WAV or analyze uncompressed audio more reliably. Separate vocal, bass, piano, and drum stems usually produce better MIDI than one stereo master.

MIDI has no universal sound. Playback varies with the selected synthesizer, instrument library, drum mapping, pitch-bend range, velocity response, and controller settings. A Standard MIDI File may use Type 0, with all events in one track, or Type 1, with events distributed across multiple synchronous tracks; check the destination application's support if track separation matters.

Manual cleanup is normally required. Remove duplicate or very short notes, repair wrong octaves and note lengths, correct tempo changes, adjust velocities, and remap drums to the note numbers expected by the target device. Transcribing a copyrighted recording does not remove copyright restrictions.
