How to convert mp3 to cda file

  • Audio

A conventional CD player, car stereo, or hi-fi unit may require an audio CD instead of MP3 files copied to a disc. Burning an audio CD creates CD-DA tracks; Windows may display those tracks as .cda entries.

What MP3 files contain

MP3 is a lossy compressed audio format used for downloaded music, podcasts, voice recordings, and portable audio players. Its small file size makes it suitable for storage and transfer, but compression permanently removes some audio information.

An MP3 can be copied to a USB drive, memory card, or data CD. A device must explicitly support MP3 playback to read that data disc; many older CD players read only standard audio CDs.

What CDA files are

A .cda file is not an audio file and cannot be meaningfully converted from MP3. In Windows, it is a tiny track-reference entry for a track on an inserted audio CD, often named Track01.cda.

The music on an audio CD is stored as CD-DA audio sectors, not as ordinary files. Copying a .cda entry to a drive copies only the reference, not the track audio. The practical equivalent of this conversion is to burn the MP3 files as a standard audio CD.

Burn MP3 files as an audio CD

You need a CD/DVD writer, a blank CD-R, and audio-CD burning software. The software decodes each MP3 and writes CD-DA audio automatically; do not create CDA files manually.

Windows Media Player Legacy, available on many Windows installations, can create an audio CD:

  1. Insert a blank CD-R.
  2. Open Windows Media Player Legacy and select the Burn tab.
  3. Open Burn options → Audio CD.
  4. Drag the MP3 files into the burn list in the required playback order.
  5. Confirm that the total running time fits the disc, then select Start burn.

If Windows Media Player is unavailable, BurnAware Free is a desktop alternative: create an Audio CD project, add the MP3 files, arrange the tracks, and select Burn. CDBurnerXP can also create audio-CD projects on supported Windows systems.

macOS Music can burn a playlist when a compatible optical drive is connected. Put the MP3 files in a playlist, select it, then choose File → Burn Playlist to Disc and select Audio CD.

Online converters cannot create usable CDA tracks because they cannot write and finalize an optical disc. Services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar can convert an unsupported source file to WAV for use in burning software, but converting MP3 to WAV is normally unnecessary.

Compatibility and quality limits

An audio CD uses 44.1 kHz, 16-bit, two-channel PCM. Burning decodes the existing MP3; it does not restore detail lost during MP3 compression. Converting MP3 to WAV before burning only creates a larger file with the same source-quality limitations.

A typical CD-R holds 74 or 80 minutes of audio, depending on the disc. Audio CDs do not use folders, and track names are usually unavailable on basic players. CD-Text titles appear only when the burner software writes CD-Text and the player supports it.

Use CD-R rather than CD-RW for the broadest player compatibility, finalize the disc, and test it in the target player. If the player explicitly supports MP3 CDs, create a data disc instead; it stores substantially more music but will not produce CDA track entries.
