Free online AIF to MP2 converter

Many broadcast, legacy playback, and authoring systems accept MPEG Layer II audio but not AIFF/AIF files. Converting an AIF recording to MP2 can reduce its size for transmission or MPEG-based workflows, but the conversion is lossy.

What AIF contains

AIF is a commonly used filename extension for AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format), a container originally developed by Apple from the IFF standard. AIFF is widely supported by digital audio workstations, samplers, recording applications, and professional editing systems.

Standard AIFF normally stores uncompressed PCM audio, so it preserves the source samples but produces large files. AIFF-C can contain compressed audio, which means an AIF filename alone does not guarantee that the contents are uncompressed. AIFF commonly stores stereo or mono audio at sample rates such as 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz, with various bit depths.

What MP2 provides

MP2 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer II, a lossy perceptual audio format also used in MPEG-2 systems. Broadcasters, digital radio systems, video authoring tools, transport streams, and older hardware often support MP2 because it offers fixed, widely specified bitrates and relatively low decoding complexity.

MP2 is smaller than uncompressed AIFF and can be appropriate when a delivery specification requires MPEG Layer II. It is not automatically better than MP3 for general music playback, and it should not be used as an archival master because encoding discards audio information.

Convert with FFmpeg

FFmpeg provides a direct desktop or command-line method and uses its native MP2 encoder. After installing FFmpeg, run:

ffmpeg -i input.aif -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k output.mp2

Replace 192k with the required bitrate. If a broadcast or authoring system specifies a sample rate and channel count, add them explicitly, for example:

ffmpeg -i input.aif -c:a mp2 -b:a 256k -ar 48000 -ac 2 output.mp2

-ar 48000 resamples to 48 kHz and -ac 2 creates two channels. Do not add either option unless the target system requires it or the source and delivery specifications differ; unnecessary resampling introduces another processing step.

Use an audio editor when editing is required

Audacity can open standard AIFF files for trimming, level adjustment, and other edits. Exporting MP2 depends on the installed Audacity and FFmpeg components exposing an MP2 encoder, so check the format list under File → Export Audio. If MP2 is unavailable, export the edited result as WAV or AIFF and encode that file with FFmpeg.

Keep an unmodified AIFF or WAV master. Editing and then encoding directly to MP2 avoids an extra lossy generation, while converting an already compressed file to MP2 compounds compression artifacts.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Lossy output: MP2 removes audio information. A higher bitrate usually reduces artifacts but cannot restore detail already discarded by a previous encode.
• Bitrate requirements: 192, 256, and 384 kbps are common choices, but broadcast and hardware specifications may require a particular bitrate, mode, or frame structure.
• Sample-rate requirements: Confirm whether the destination expects 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz. A file with valid MP2 encoding can still be rejected if its sampling parameters do not match the workflow.
• Channel layout: Check whether the destination accepts stereo, joint stereo, mono, or dual-channel MP2. Do not assume that every MP2 decoder handles each mode identically.
• Metadata: AIFF markers, embedded artwork, and application-specific metadata may not survive the conversion. Preserve the original file and verify the output in the receiving application.
