How to convert wrf to arf file

A recording may need this conversion when a recipient or Webex deployment requires an ARF file that opens in the Network Recording Player. A local WRF recording cannot be converted into a valid ARF by changing its extension or using a general video converter.
What the WRF format is
WRF means Webex Recording Format. Older Cisco Webex desktop recording tools create WRF files when a host records a meeting locally. Depending on the recording, the file can contain meeting video, audio, screen sharing, cursor activity, annotations, and other presentation data.
WRF is a proprietary recording container intended for Cisco Webex playback and editing software, not for ordinary media players. It is commonly found as a locally saved file with the .wrf extension.
What the ARF format is
ARF means Webex Advanced Recording File. Webex server-based recording services can create ARF files for recordings stored in a Webex account. An ARF may preserve Webex-specific elements such as video, audio, screen sharing, chat, polls, chapters, and participant information.
ARF is opened with Cisco Webex Network Recording Player or compatible Webex software. It is not a general-purpose video format, and an ARF file is not a WRF file with a different filename extension.
How to convert WRF files
There is no supported direct WRF-to-ARF conversion. Cisco desktop tools can export a WRF recording to a standard video file, but they do not create an ARF container from it. Renaming recording.wrf as recording.arf produces an invalid file.
If the meeting was recorded by Webex’s server, obtain the original server recording instead:
- Sign in to the relevant Webex site and open the host’s recording list, or ask the host or Webex administrator for the recording.
- Download the original
.arffile if the recording was stored in ARF format. Newer Webex recordings are often available as.mp4instead. - Open the ARF with Cisco Webex Network Recording Player.
If only a local WRF file exists, export it to a standard video format:
- Install the Cisco Webex Recording Editor or compatible Webex recording software for the recording’s version and operating system. Availability is limited for older Webex releases, and the editor is generally a Windows application.
- Open File → Open and select
recording.wrf. - Choose File → Convert or File → Export; the exact command depends on the release. Select WMV when it is offered.
- Play the exported WMV and check the picture, audio, and synchronization before removing the WRF source.
To make an MP4 for current players and editors, transcode the exported WMV with FFmpeg, for example:
ffmpeg -i recording.wmv -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k recording.mp4
Do not send the WRF directly to FFmpeg, HandBrake, or an online converter; these tools generally cannot decode the proprietary WRF container. If the Cisco editor is unavailable, a screen recording can capture playback, but it is a real-time re-recording rather than a lossless conversion.
Quality and compatibility limits
Exporting WRF to WMV and then encoding it as MP4 can change resolution, frame rate, audio channels, and synchronization. Chat, polls, chapters, annotations, cursor behavior, and participant metadata may be lost because standard video files do not contain the full Webex session structure. Keep the original WRF for archival purposes.
Reputable online converters cannot produce a valid ARF because ARF generation depends on Webex’s proprietary server recording structure. They also commonly lack WRF support. Do not upload confidential meetings to an unverified service; use the Cisco export tools or obtain the original server recording.
