How to convert arf to wrf file

  • Video

ARF recordings may need conversion when a recipient cannot open them, while WRF is required only by a workflow built around Cisco Webex Recorder or Editor. Cisco does not provide a direct ARF-to-WRF conversion, so exporting to MP4 is normally the correct solution; creating WRF requires a new recording.

What the ARF format is

ARF (Advanced Recording Format) is Cisco Webex's proprietary network-recording format. Webex sites use it for server-based meeting recordings that users download from a recording page. An ARF can contain meeting video, audio, shared content, chat, polls, participant information, and other session data, so it is more than a conventional video stream. The Cisco Webex Network Recording Player is required to open ARF files, and ordinary media players generally cannot read them.

What the WRF format is

WRF (Webex Recording Format) is Cisco's proprietary desktop-recording format, created by Webex Recorder for locally captured presentations, meetings, demonstrations, and screen activity. WRF works with compatible Webex recording and editing software and can retain recorder-specific editing data. Its main advantage is Webex Recorder/Editor compatibility; MP4 has much broader support for playback, editing, sharing, and long-term storage.

How to handle an ARF recording

There is no supported native conversion from ARF to WRF. The Network Recording Player can export an ARF to a standard video format, but WRF is not a normal export target.

  1. Install the Cisco Webex Network Recording Player from the Webex site or recording page that supplied the file. Use a version compatible with the ARF and your operating system; available conversion formats vary by Webex release.
  2. Open the player and choose File → Open, then select the .arf file.
  3. Choose File → Convert and select MP4 if the installed player offers it. Some older installations offer WMV instead.
  4. Choose an output folder and let the player process the complete recording. Conversion commonly takes approximately the duration of the recording because the player may render it during playback.

Use MP4 for normal sharing, editing, playback, and archiving. WMV is a fallback for older Webex installations, but it has less current compatibility than MP4.

When a WRF file is mandatory

If a downstream system accepts only WRF, play the ARF in the Network Recording Player and capture that playback with a compatible Cisco Webex Recorder, if that recorder is still available for the account and operating system. Start the recorder, select the player window or the full screen as the capture area, begin recording, play the ARF from start to finish, and save the new capture as .wrf.

This is re-recording, not conversion. The new WRF contains the visible and audible playback only; it does not retain the ARF's separate tracks, interactive content, chat, polls, participant metadata, or original recording structure. If Webex Recorder is unavailable, a generic screen recorder can create a video file, but it cannot produce a genuine WRF file.

Quality, privacy, and compatibility limits

Exporting to MP4 can omit Webex-specific interactive data and may reflect the selected player layout. Re-recording can reduce resolution and audio quality, capture cursors or window borders, and introduce timing or synchronization problems. Keep the original ARF when its meeting data may be needed, and retain the exported MP4 as the broadly compatible copy.

General online converters are not a practical or trustworthy option for this proprietary format pair. Services that accept ordinary video files generally do not support ARF-to-WRF conversion, and uploading a meeting recording can disclose confidential audio, video, chat, shared screens, or participant information. Use Cisco's desktop player for ARF export and avoid online upload unless the service explicitly documents support and the recording is approved for external processing.
