Convert APK to MKV

A video editor or media player may require an MKV recording made from an Android app, while an APK itself is only an application package. The usable method is to extract a video asset from the package or run the app and record its rendered screen.

What the APK format is

APK means Android Package Kit. Android uses it to install applications, and Android Studio, Gradle, and other Android build systems generate it. An APK normally contains compiled code, resources, images, audio, optional video, configuration data, and a signing certificate.

An APK is a ZIP-compatible archive, not a video container. Media may be stored in directories such as assets, res/raw, or res/drawable, but an application may also download media after installation or store it without a recognizable extension. Obfuscation, compression, encryption, split APKs, and app-specific formats can prevent simple extraction from revealing the source media.

What the MKV format is

MKV, or Matroska Video, is a multimedia container that can hold video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, metadata, and attachments. It supports codecs including H.264, H.265, AV1, VP9, AAC, and Opus; MKV itself is not a codec.

Matroska is suitable for archival files, screen recordings, and files with several tracks. Compatibility is less universal than MP4: some phones, browsers, televisions, editors, and social platforms handle MP4 more reliably.

How to create an MKV from an APK

Extract an embedded video

1. Make a copy of the APK. Open it with 7-Zip on Windows, a ZIP utility on macOS, or the unzip command on Linux and macOS.
2. Extract it with unzip app.apk -d app_extracted, or use Extract in 7-Zip.
3. Search the extracted files for .mp4, .webm, .mkv, .3gp, and .ts. Also inspect files without extensions with MediaInfo or FFmpeg.
4. If the source is already a usable video, remux it into Matroska without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0 -c copy output.mkv

-map 0 copies all detected streams that the output container supports. Remuxing is fast and does not reduce the quality of the encoded streams. If a codec or stream layout is unsuitable for Matroska, encode a new file:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0 -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mkv

Re-encoding takes longer and can reduce quality. Adjust the video codec and audio settings for the target player; libx264 with AAC offers broader compatibility than newer codecs.

Record the running application

If the required result is a video of the interface, gameplay, or media displayed by the app, install the APK on an Android device or emulator and record its output. scrcpy can mirror an Android screen to Windows, macOS, or Linux, and OBS Studio can record the mirrored window.

1. Enable Developer options and USB debugging, connect the device by USB, and verify it with adb devices.
2. Start scrcpy with scrcpy. Recent versions can record directly with scrcpy --record=record.mkv; supported recording options vary by version, and audio capture depends on Android and device support.
3. For scene, source, resolution, frame-rate, and audio controls, add the scrcpy window to OBS Studio. Open Settings → Output → Recording, choose Matroska Video (.mkv), then select Start Recording.
4. Alternatively, use Android's built-in screen recorder and remux its resulting MP4 or WebM file with FFmpeg.

Screen capture may omit protected video, system audio, or microphone audio when Android or the application blocks those sources. An emulator provides repeatable capture but may not reproduce a physical device's performance, display, or hardware behavior.

Online converters and compatibility limits

Online video services do not turn an APK into a video or run its Android code. After extracting a normal video file, services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar can convert supported video inputs to MKV, but local FFmpeg, HandBrake, or Shutter Encoder avoids upload limits and preserves privacy. Do not upload proprietary, paid, signed, or personally identifiable APKs or extracted media to a third-party service.

Renaming app.apk to app.mkv changes only the filename and leaves the ZIP archive unchanged. Extracting files does not alter the APK signature, but modifying or rebuilding the package invalidates its original signing relationship unless the rebuilt package is signed again. A single APK may also be only one part of a split installation, and downloaded content may exist only in the application's private storage after installation.
