Free online APK to 7Z converter

People convert an APK to 7Z when an archive program, backup workflow, or file-transfer system requires 7Z, or when they want to store an APK with other files. The result is an archive for storage or transfer, not an Android package that can be installed directly.

What the APK format is

An APK (Android Package Kit) is the installable application-package format used by Android. Developers build APKs with tools such as Android Studio and Gradle; app stores, deployment systems, and backup utilities also distribute or create them.

An APK is a ZIP-based package containing compiled code, resources, a manifest, assets, native libraries, and signing information. Android validates its package structure and signatures during installation, while archive utilities such as 7-Zip can open its contents.

What the 7Z format is

7Z is an archive format used by 7-Zip and compatible utilities. It supports high compression ratios, solid compression, large files, and optional AES-256 encryption. A 7Z archive can contain one APK, the extracted contents of an APK, or several related files.

Android does not install 7Z archives. The original APK must be extracted from the archive before it can be passed to Android's package installer.

How to convert APK to 7Z

With 7-Zip on Windows

1. Install 7-Zip, then open File Explorer and locate the APK.
2. To archive the unchanged APK, right-click it and select 7-Zip → Add to archive....
3. Set Archive format to 7z, choose a compression level, and enter a name such as application.7z.
4. Select OK. The resulting 7Z file contains the original APK as one item.

Keep the APK intact when installation or signature verification matters. This method compresses the APK without changing its bytes.

To archive the APK's internal files rather than the APK itself, first right-click the APK and select 7-Zip → Extract to application\. Open the resulting folder, select its contents, choose 7-Zip → Add to archive..., set Archive format to 7z, and save the archive. This creates a 7Z containing the extracted package files, not a usable replacement APK.

With the 7-Zip command line

To place an unchanged APK inside a 7Z archive, run:

7z a -t7z application.7z application.apk

To extract the APK and archive its contents separately, run:

7z x application.apk -oapk_contents
7z a -t7z application_contents.7z ./apk_contents/.

On Linux and macOS, install a package that provides the 7z command before using these commands. Do not upload applications containing confidential data unless the service's handling and retention terms are acceptable.

Compatibility and limitations

Storing the APK as one item inside a 7Z archive is lossless: extracting it restores the original APK bytes. Compression may save little space because APKs commonly contain already-compressed images, native libraries, and other compressed data. Encryption protects the 7Z archive with a password, but it does not add or preserve Android installation status beyond the original APK.

Renaming application.7z to application.apk does not convert it. Extract the original APK first, then install that extracted file through Android or a suitable deployment tool.

Extracting and rebuilding an APK changes its package data and can invalidate its original signature. APK Signature Scheme v2 and later sign the contents of the package, so a rebuilt file may fail Android verification even if its files appear unchanged. Keep the original APK when its signature, update compatibility, or installation behavior must be preserved.

A 7Z archive containing several split APKs is not automatically installable as a single APK. Split packages must retain all required components and be installed with a tool that supports that package set.
