Convert APK to 3GP

Older phones, MMS systems, and legacy video editors may require 3GP, while an APK is an Android application package rather than a video file. The usable conversion is to extract a video from the APK, if one exists, and convert that video to 3GP.

What the APK format is

An APK is the installable package format used by Android. Android Studio and Gradle build tools create APKs containing compiled code, an application manifest, resources, signing data, and sometimes bundled audio, video, or images.

APK files use a ZIP-compatible archive structure, so tools such as 7-Zip and unzip can inspect them. APKs are encountered when installing apps outside Google Play, testing development builds, archiving applications, or examining bundled assets. An app may instead store media in a split APK, an expansion package, or a server download after installation.

What the 3GP format is

3GP is a multimedia container developed for older 3G mobile networks and handsets. Depending on the device profile, it can contain MPEG-4 Part 2, H.263, or other supported video streams with AAC or AMR audio.

Low resolutions, modest bitrates, and small file sizes made 3GP suitable for early mobile phones, MMS attachments, and limited storage. Modern devices generally support MP4 more reliably, so 3GP is appropriate mainly when a particular legacy phone, messaging system, or editor requires it.

How to convert the media

1. Copy the APK and work on the copy. Do not install an unknown package merely to obtain its media.
2. Extract the archive. In 7-Zip, use 7-Zip → Open archive and extract the contents. From a terminal, run 7z x app.apk -oapk_contents or unzip app.apk -d apk_contents.
3. Locate a source video. Check assets, res/raw, and other extracted directories for .mp4, .webm, .mkv, .3gp, and similar files. Obfuscated assets may have no useful extension; inspect them with ffprobe filename or the operating system's file-identification tool instead of blindly renaming them.
4. Convert the extracted video with FFmpeg. This example creates a broadly compatible, low-resolution 3GP file: ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf 'scale=320:240:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=320:240:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2' -c:v mpeg4 -b:v 500k -r 15 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 32k -ar 8000 output.3gp. Replace input.mp4 with the actual source filename.
5. Test the output. Open it in VLC, then test it on the target phone or application. A short test clip can reveal codec, resolution, audio, and file-size restrictions before a full conversion.

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option because it exposes the container, codec, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, and audio settings. HandBrake can prepare or resize the source, but current releases do not reliably offer 3GP output. Online services such as CloudConvert, Zamzar, and Convertio can process the extracted video; select a 3GP output profile when available. They generally cannot turn an APK into a meaningful playable video, and uploading an APK may disclose application code or private assets.

Compatibility and quality limits

An APK may contain no video. Its media may be downloaded after installation, stored in another package, encrypted or obfuscated, or assembled from separate resources. Extraction cannot recover a standalone video in those cases without examining how the application obtains and decodes the content.

Very old handsets may require H.263 video, AMR-NB mono audio, 176×144 resolution, and 15 frames per second rather than MPEG-4 and AAC. If the FFmpeg build includes the libopencore_amrnb encoder, an example is ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v h263 -b:v 200k -s 176x144 -r 15 -c:a libopencore_amrnb -ar 8000 -ac 1 -b:a 12.2k legacy.3gp. If that encoder is unavailable, use AAC only when the target device supports it, or install an FFmpeg build with the required encoder.

3GP conversion can reduce resolution, frame rate, color detail, and audio quality. The output may be incompatible even when it has a .3gp extension because 3GP supports multiple codec profiles; retain the extracted original because transcoding cannot restore discarded data.
