How to convert apk to avi file

A legacy media player or editor may require AVI, while an APK is an Android application rather than video. To produce AVI footage, run the app and record its screen, or extract a video asset from the package and transcode that asset.

What the APK format is

An APK is an installable Android application package. Android Studio and Gradle-based build systems create APKs; users commonly encounter them when installing software outside Google Play or transferring an application manually. An APK is a ZIP-based archive containing items such as compiled code, resources, assets, a manifest, and signing certificates. It does not normally contain a recording of the application running.

An APK can include video files in its assets or resource directories, but those files are optional. They may be encrypted, obfuscated, streamed from a server, or stored in a format that is not obvious from its filename.

What the AVI format is

AVI is a Microsoft multimedia container for audio and video streams. It remains useful for older Windows players, editing programs, and workflows that specifically require an AVI file. AVI does not define one universal codec: an AVI can contain MPEG-4 Part 2 video with MP3 audio, uncompressed video, or many other stream types. Compatibility therefore depends on both the container and its codecs.

How to extract and convert an embedded video

  1. Make a copy of the APK and treat packages from unknown sources as unsafe. Do not install an untrusted APK merely to inspect its contents.
  2. Open the copy with 7-Zip or another ZIP utility, or rename app.apk to app.zip and extract it. Inspect assets/, res/raw/, and other resource directories for video files such as .mp4, .webm, or .3gp.
  3. Check a candidate with MediaInfo or ffprobe input.mp4. If it is a valid video, convert it with FFmpeg: ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 3 -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 output.avi. Lower -q:v values generally produce better video and larger files.
  4. Open output.avi in the software that requires it. If it rejects the file, use the codec combination specified by that software; AVI compatibility is not guaranteed by the .avi extension alone.

CloudConvert and Zamzar can transcode an extracted video such as MP4 to AVI through a browser. Upload only a non-sensitive video: online services do not need the APK itself, and sending an APK to a web converter is inappropriate because it may contain private code, credentials, or proprietary assets. A web service cannot create footage of an app without executing it.

How to record the running app

  1. Install Android SDK Platform-Tools for adb, or use Android Studio to create an Android Virtual Device. Alternatively, connect a physical Android device with USB debugging enabled. Install the package with adb install app.apk and launch it. Review permissions and source reputation before installing.
  2. Start Android's built-in recorder with adb shell screenrecord --time-limit 180 /sdcard/capture.mp4, operate the app, and stop it with Ctrl+C. Copy the recording to the computer with adb pull /sdcard/capture.mp4 capture.mp4. The time limit and supported resolution vary by Android version and device.
  3. Convert the resulting MP4 with the FFmpeg command above. The recording's resolution and frame rate cannot exceed what the emulator or device captured.

adb shell screenrecord commonly captures no app or system audio. For audio, mirror the device with scrcpy and capture the mirror with OBS Studio, or record narration and other sources separately. Android version, device, application, and audio-routing support determine whether internal audio is available.

OBS Studio is suitable for recording an emulator window, a scrcpy mirror, narration, and multiple sources. Use Settings → Output → Recording and record to MKV or MP4 first, then transcode with FFmpeg; direct AVI recording does not reliably provide the codec combination required by the receiving program.

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting a screen recording does not restore detail lost during capture or encoding. AVI files can be substantially larger than MP4 or WebM, especially with uncompressed video. MPEG-4 Part 2 video with MP3 audio is broadly supported by older software, but a target program may instead require a specific frame size, frame rate, audio format, or codec. If the APK contains no usable video asset, or its media is encrypted or streamed, extraction will not produce a playable source; recording the app is the applicable method.
