Convert APK to MP4

A video editor, media player, or sharing service requires MP4 when you need to distribute an app demonstration, gameplay capture, or recorded device activity. An APK cannot be directly converted into that video; run the application and record its rendered screen, or extract and convert an actual video asset inside the package.

What the APK format is

An APK is an Android application package used to install software on Android phones, tablets, TVs, emulators, and test devices. Android Studio and the Android Gradle Plugin create APKs, while users encounter them when installing apps outside Google Play, testing builds, or backing up applications.

An APK is a ZIP-based package containing compiled application code, resources, a manifest, native libraries, and signing data. It is an executable package, not a video container, so renaming app.apk to app.mp4 cannot create a playable video. An APK may contain images, audio, animations, or source video files, but those are separate resources.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a multimedia container commonly used for H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio. Phones, browsers, editing applications, televisions, and social platforms support it widely, making it suitable for sharing, editing, and archiving screen recordings.

MP4 stores the recording or extracted media; it does not preserve the APK's executable code, interface behavior, permissions, signing, or installability.

How to create an MP4 from app activity

Use screen recording when the required video is the application in operation. The recording captures only what the device or emulator renders.

1. Install the APK on an Android device or Android Studio emulator. With Android Debug Bridge, run adb install app.apk; on an emulator, you can also drag the file onto the emulator window.
2. Open the application and configure its display orientation, resolution, and content before recording.
3. On a supported Android device, use Quick Settings → Screen record. Select device audio, microphone audio, or both if those options are available.
4. For a computer-based workflow, mirror the device with scrcpy or capture an emulator window with OBS Studio. In OBS, add Sources → + → Window Capture, select the device or emulator window, and configure the required audio source.
5. Record at the application's native resolution and a constant frame rate. OBS can record directly to MP4, but MKV is safer if a recording may be interrupted; use File → Remux Recordings afterward to create MP4 without re-encoding.

For video-only capture through ADB, use the Android device's screenrecord command:

adb shell screenrecord --bit-rate 12000000 --time-limit 180 /sdcard/capture.mp4

Copy the result to the computer with adb pull /sdcard/capture.mp4. ADB screen recording generally does not capture application audio; use the device recorder, OBS, or another audio-capable capture method when sound is needed. Recent versions of scrcpy can also record the mirrored output, for example scrcpy --record=capture.mp4; supported audio capture depends on the Android version and scrcpy release.

How to convert a video asset inside an APK

Use this method only when the APK contains the source video you need, rather than an interactive scene. Make a copy of the APK and inspect it with 7-Zip or Android Studio APK Analyzer. Check locations such as assets/ and res/raw/ for files with video extensions. Some applications download media after installation instead of storing it in the APK.

Identify the source format and codecs with FFmpeg's ffprobe:

ffprobe source-file

Convert the extracted file with FFmpeg when it is not already compatible with the intended player or editor:

ffmpeg -i source-file -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.mp4

For a graphical desktop alternative, VLC can convert many supported inputs through Media → Convert/Save, and HandBrake can encode video to H.264 MP4. Online services such as CloudConvert or Convertio may convert an extracted, supported video file, but they do not execute APKs or turn app behavior into video. Do not upload an APK containing proprietary code, personal data, credentials, or unknown software.

Quality and compatibility limits

For 1080p screen content, a bitrate around 8–16 Mb/s, H.264 video, AAC audio, and a constant frame rate provide broad compatibility. H.265 can reduce file size but has less support in older devices and editing software. The yuv420p pixel format avoids compatibility problems with players that reject other chroma formats.

Screen recording cannot recover hidden screens, source-quality animation, or content that was never rendered. Android applications can mark protected surfaces with FLAG_SECURE; DRM video and other protected content may appear black or be blocked. Dynamic content may also require network access or application-specific decoding.

An APK from an unknown source can contain malware. Scan it before installation, avoid running untrusted packages on a personal device, and prefer local extraction and recording over uploading the package to a conversion service.
