Convert APK to MOV

Source format

APK is the package file format used by Android to distribute and install apps. It is not a media format and does not normally contain a playable video. APK files are used by Android developers, app stores, and users who install apps outside the Google Play Store. Typical contents include app code, resources, certificates, and sometimes bundled media assets.

Because an APK is an application package, converting it directly to MOV is usually not a true file-format conversion. In most cases, the real goal is to extract a video file from inside the APK if one exists, or to capture the app’s screen output and save that recording as MOV.

Target format

MOV is a multimedia container format developed by Apple and commonly associated with QuickTime. It is widely used for video editing, archiving, and playback on Apple devices and many desktop media players. MOV can store high-quality video and audio, multiple tracks, and professional editing workflows.

Its main advantages are good editing compatibility, broad support in creative software, and the ability to store high-quality media with flexible codecs. It is commonly used for camera footage, screen recordings, and post-production work.

How to perform the conversion

There is no direct one-step APK to MOV converter because the formats serve completely different purposes. The best method depends on what you actually need:

1. If the APK contains an embedded video file

Use an archive tool to inspect and extract the contents of the APK, since APK files are essentially ZIP archives.

1. Make a copy of the APK file.
2. Rename it from app.apk to app.zip, or open it directly with 7-Zip or WinRAR.
3. Look for media files such as .mp4, .3gp, .webm, or similar assets inside folders like assets or res.
4. Extract the video file.
5. If needed, convert that extracted video to MOV using HandBrake, FFmpeg, or QuickTime Player.

With FFmpeg, a typical conversion command is:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v prores_ks -profile:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.mov

This creates a high-quality MOV file using Apple ProRes video and uncompressed audio.

2. If you want to record the app running and save it as MOV

This is the most common practical workflow.

1. Install the APK on an Android device or emulator.
2. Open the app and navigate to the screen you want to capture.
3. Record the screen using OBS Studio, a built-in Android screen recorder, or another capture setup.
4. Save or export the recording as MOV, or convert the recorded file to MOV afterward.

Best desktop software: FFmpeg is the most flexible choice for conversion after extraction or recording. HandBrake is easier for most users when converting a normal video file to MOV-compatible output. 7-Zip is useful for inspecting APK contents. For screen recording, OBS Studio is a strong free option.

Reputable online converters: If you already have a video extracted from the APK or a screen recording, services such as CloudConvert or Convertio can convert common video formats to MOV. They cannot meaningfully convert an APK itself into MOV unless the APK contains an actual video asset.

Notes on quality, compatibility, or limitations

APK files cannot be converted directly to MOV in the normal sense because an APK is not a video container. Any successful result requires either extracting a video from the APK or recording the app’s output.

If you extract a video asset, the original quality depends on how it was stored inside the APK. If you re-encode it to MOV, quality may change depending on the codec and settings. For best quality, use a high-quality codec such as ProRes when editing, or copy the stream without re-encoding only if the source codec is already suitable.

Some APKs are obfuscated, encrypted, or protected, which can make asset extraction difficult or impossible. Also, many apps stream content from the internet rather than storing video inside the APK, so there may be nothing to extract. In those cases, screen recording is the practical alternative.

For compatibility, MOV plays best in Apple software and professional editors, but many modern players on Windows, Linux, and Android also support it. If broad playback compatibility is more important than editing, MP4 is often a better delivery format than MOV.
