apk to obb file conversion
You cannot directly convert an APK to an OBB file. An APK is the Android app package, while an OBB file is an expansion file used by some apps and games to store large assets such as media, maps, or game data.
In the past, Google Play supported expansion files for apps that exceeded the APK size limit. That limit and the distribution model have changed over time, and modern apps often use Play Asset Delivery or Play Feature Delivery instead of OBB files.
If you need an OBB file for an app or game, it is usually created by the developer, not generated from an existing APK. Android Studio can help developers package expansion content, but it does not convert an APK into an OBB file automatically.
Important: the old Google Play expansion-file workflow used a main and sometimes a patch OBB file. These files are tied to the app package name and version, so they must match the installed APK.
To use an OBB file on a device, place it in the correct folder for the app, typically:
/Android/obb/<package.name>/
The OBB file name usually follows this pattern:
main.<versionCode>.<package.name>.obb
For example, if the package name is com.example.game and the version code is 1, the file may need to be stored as:
/Android/obb/com.example.game/main.1.com.example.game.obb
If a game also uses a patch file, it may look like:
patch.<versionCode>.<package.name>.obb
Important: the APK and OBB must belong to the same app package and usually the same version. If they do not match, the app may fail to detect the expansion file.
If you are trying to install a game that uses OBB data, install the APK first, then copy the OBB file to the correct folder before launching the app. On many devices, the path is on internal storage or shared storage, and some file managers may show it as Android > obb > package.name.
If you only have an APK and no OBB file, there is no reliable way to extract a valid OBB from it unless the developer already bundled the expansion data separately.
