Convert APK to RAR

A backup service or file-sharing system may require a RAR archive instead of an individual APK. Creating a RAR places the original APK inside a new archive; it does not change the application into another installable format.

What the APK format is

APK means Android Package Kit. Android uses APK files to install applications, while Android Studio and Gradle-based build systems produce them during application builds.

An APK contains compiled code, resources, an application manifest, signing information, and metadata. Its package structure is ZIP-based, but an APK is not simply an arbitrary ZIP renamed with an .apk extension. Android expects the APK structure, signature, and filename when installing it.

What the RAR format is

RAR is a compressed archive format that combines one or more files into a single container. RAR supports compression, password encryption, recovery records, comments, and split volumes such as backup.part1.rar and backup.part2.rar.

RAR is useful when a storage or sharing service requires that format, when several APKs must be bundled, or when an archive needs volume splitting or encryption. It may not reduce the size much because APKs commonly contain compressed resources and libraries.

How to create a RAR containing an APK

Using WinRAR on Windows

1. Install WinRAR from the official RARLAB website.
2. In File Explorer, right-click the APK and select Add to archive....
3. Set Archive format to RAR.
4. Enter an output name such as my-app.rar and choose the destination folder.
5. Use Normal compression for a typical APK. Choose Store when speed matters or the APK is already compressed.
6. Click OK. WinRAR creates a RAR whose payload is the original my-app.apk.

For the RARLAB command-line tool, run this from the APK's directory:

rar a -m5 my-app.rar my-app.apk

-m5 selects maximum compression; use -m0 to store the APK without further compression. The rar executable must be installed and available in the system path. On systems with a recent WinRAR version, choose RAR4 instead of RAR5 only when the recipient uses an older extractor.

Using an online converter

A browser-based service such as ezyZip's RAR compressor can create a RAR archive without desktop software: open the RAR compression tool, add the APK, create the archive, and download the resulting .rar file. Online tool interfaces and supported archive features can change, so confirm that the service creates RAR rather than only ZIP or 7Z files.

Do not upload private, proprietary, paid, or untrusted APKs unless the service's handling and retention policies are acceptable. A local tool such as WinRAR avoids transferring the file to a third party.

Compatibility and limitations

Do not merely rename app.apk to app.rar; the result still has ZIP-based APK data and is not a valid RAR archive. Do not extract the APK and recompress its internal files as a RAR if the APK must remain installable. Instead, archive the intact APK as one file.

Creating the RAR does not change the APK's code, signing certificate, manifest, or install behavior. To install it, extract the RAR and use the contained .apk file. A RAR itself cannot be installed by Android.

Android installation can still fail because of an invalid or incompatible signature, an unsupported CPU architecture, a minimum Android-version requirement, device security settings, or because the package is only one part of a split application. Files such as .apks, .xapk, and .apkm may require their corresponding installer rather than ordinary APK installation.

7-Zip can open and extract RAR archives, but it does not create them. Use WinRAR, the RARLAB command-line tool, or an online service that explicitly supports RAR creation when the output must have the .rar format.
