Convert RAR to OBB

An Android game may require a standalone .obb expansion file even when its download arrives as a .rar archive. The usual task is to extract the OBB and place it beside the matching APK, not to convert arbitrary RAR data into a new format.

What the RAR format is

RAR is a compressed archive format used by WinRAR and compatible extraction tools. It can contain one or many files, use solid compression and recovery records, and be split into volumes such as game.part1.rar, game.part2.rar, and later parts.

RAR files are common in software downloads, game-data packages, backups, and file-sharing archives. WinRAR, 7-Zip, Keka, and The Unarchiver can extract them; creating a new RAR requires software with RAR-writing support.

What the OBB format is

OBB, short for Android opaque binary blob, is an application-specific expansion file. It commonly stores large game assets such as maps, textures, audio, video, and other data that would make the APK unnecessarily large.

Android applications normally expect a filename such as main.<version>.<package-name>.obb or patch.<version>.<package-name>.obb, plus a particular internal layout. Many conventional OBB expansion files use ZIP-compatible packaging while retaining the .obb extension, but the extension alone does not define a valid OBB. Renaming a RAR file to .obb cannot make it compatible.

How to extract an existing OBB

1. On Windows, install WinRAR or 7-Zip. On macOS, use Keka or The Unarchiver. Linux users can use 7-Zip, commonly provided by the p7zip or 7zip package.
2. Keep every volume in the same folder and open the first one, usually game.part1.rar or game.rar. Starting with a later volume will usually produce an incomplete extraction.
3. Choose Extract to and extract the archive into a temporary folder. With 7-Zip's command-line tool, use 7z x game.rar -oextracted.
4. Find the extracted .obb file. Check its filename, package identifier, and version against the application or the publisher's installation instructions; do not rename it without explicit instructions.
5. Install the matching APK if the publisher requires separate installation, then copy the OBB to Android/obb/<package-name>/. For package name com.example.game, the usual directory is Android/obb/com.example.game/.
6. Start the application. The APK version, package name, OBB filename, and OBB contents must correspond.

Android 11 and later restrict direct access to Android/obb for many file managers. Use a USB computer connection, the device's system file picker, or the installation procedure supplied by the publisher when ordinary file browsing cannot create or modify that directory.

What to do when the archive contains no OBB

If extraction produces ordinary folders or files rather than an OBB, there is no universal RAR-to-OBB converter. The application developer must define the required directory structure, asset format, package name, version, compression method, and validation rules.

When the developer explicitly documents a ZIP-based expansion file, create a ZIP with the required root layout using 7-Zip or another ZIP utility, then use the documented OBB filename. For example, 7z a -tzip main.1.com.example.game.obb contents/ creates ZIP data with an OBB extension. This works only when the application accepts that structure; adding or omitting a root directory can make the file unusable.

Online and desktop tools

For a non-sensitive archive, browser-based extractors such as ezyZip can extract RAR contents without installing desktop software, subject to their current browser, size, and multipart support. CloudConvert and similar archive-conversion services may convert RAR to ZIP, but the resulting ZIP is not automatically a valid application OBB. Do not upload proprietary game assets, personal backups, or untrusted files unless the service's processing and privacy terms are acceptable; desktop extraction with 7-Zip or WinRAR avoids that transfer.

Compatibility and quality limits

• Extraction is lossless: it restores data stored in the RAR and does not convert, improve, or repair the game assets.
• WinRAR's Tools → Repair archive can help only when the archive has suitable recovery information. It cannot reconstruct data that was never stored or was completely lost.
• An OBB may be encrypted, signed, application-specific, or checked against the APK through a checksum. Modifying or recompressing it can cause the application to reject it.
• Google Play increasingly distributes expansion data through Android App Bundles and asset packs instead of standalone OBB files. A manually copied OBB may therefore be unsupported even when its filename and folder look correct.
• Obtain APK and OBB files from the application publisher or another trusted source; a matching filename does not establish that the files are safe or authentic.
